Montville Sophomore Places High in NY Cross Country Classic

Cassandra Harasts placed first in her age group and third in her gender, out of 94 women.

About 260 men and women laced up for the 4-mile Henry Isola Cross Country Classic at Van Cortlandt Park last Sunday in the Bronx, N.Y.

Out of 94 women who placed, Cassandra Harasts, a sophomore at Montville High School, finished third. She placed 31 overall and first in her age group with a net time of 27 minutes and 24 seconds, according to the race results.

This race is the first of five New York Road Runners cross country races taking place this fall. The Henry Isola opened the season, said NYRR.

Harasts joined runners of all different ages and abilities to run in a recently re-opened park. Van Cortlandt Park fully reopened in 2012 after several years of renovation, said NYRR

She set the “High School record for the distance,” said Angelo Harasts, adding that the race takes place on a “very challenging course which runs up cemetery hill twice. The hill is called cemetery hill for two reasons. First is there is a small cemetery at the top of the hill and second it kills you when you try to run up it.”

Harasts added “She is running another race this weekend in New York.”
