School Paraprofessionals Keep Full Time Hours

District, union reach agreement in light of concerns about Affordable Health Care Act fines, according to a news report.

Paraprofessionals at Montville Township schools will continue working full time, according to a news report.

The district had considered cutting their hours to avoid fines under the Affordable Health Care Act, but reached an agreement with the Montville Township Education Association after learning more about how fines are levied, Board of Education President Dr. Karen Cortellino told The Record.

The aides now can receive health insurance through the district as long as they pay for it themselves, The Record reported.

Montville paraprofessionals are paid hourly and typically earn around $15 an hour working full time, but do not receive health insurance.

Under the law, the district only would be fined when employees for whom the cost of insurance exceeds 9.5 percent of their household income apply for and receive a federal subsidy, according to the report.
