Drop-Off Box for Unwanted Prescriptions Sees Plenty of Use

Medicine can be placed in MedReturn box in Montville police lobby.

A container that was recently installed in the Montville Township police lobby so people can discard their unwanted prescriptions already has gotten plenty of use.

Lt. Andrew Caggiano said the MedReturn box already had to be emptied by the Morris County Sheriff's Office, which coordinates the program with other law enforcement agencies in Morris County.

The box was donated by Morris County Prevention is Key. A celebration for the launch of the program was held in May.

It's a way for people to get prescription drugs out of their homes that could be expired, abused and a hazard for children.

Accepted items for disposal include prescriptions, prescription patches, prescription medications, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, medication samples and medications for pets.

Items that are not accepted include needles (sharps), thermometers, hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, aerosol cans, medication from businesses or clinics and ointments, lotions or liquids.

Caggiano said the program is anonymous and people can drop off medicine without going to the police window.
