Montville Recognizes November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

PurpleStride 5K to be held at the Parsippany Mack Cali campus on Nov. 10.

Mayor Tim Braden began Tuesday's meeting by announcing a township resolution that recognized November 2013 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

Carole Beck, from the PCAN North Jersey affiliate, was on hand to accept the resolution plaque.

“The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the only national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure,” said Beck. “We would like to thank the Montville Township committee … for declaring November 2013 for pancreatic cancer awareness month in Montville.”

Two years ago Beck ran a 5k with little knowledge about pancreatic cancer and when she got there, she “was overwhelmed. There was somewhere close to 3,000 people all in a sea of purple,” she said, adding that her “childhood girlfriend had died and my husband’s friend from grammar school had died from pancreatic cancer.”

“I became a volunteer and an active member in the (PCAN) … This is a problem that is affecting our entire community. The incidents and death rates for pancreatic cancer are increasing,” said Beck.
