On the article PTAs to Begin Collecting Sales Tax During Fundraisers
Sue Marinello

ReplyPerhaps the comptroller would be happier if all of MD's PTAs, and their volunteer labor, simply closed-up shop and allowed the state of MD to pick up the tab for all that the PTAs pay for, donate, and do for free? This is an absurd and petty interpretation of tax law which will only hinder the good works donated by this volunteer, educational, non-profit, organization. People in the 21st Century already find volunteering to be an odious task, now the state of MD is, in essence, recommending that volunteer treasurers be CPAs? If the state cannot facilitate volunteerism, then the state should be required to pick up the tab for all the extra educational advantages that volunteers bring to the public schools.

ReplyI have a list, as well, Patricia, and I think these are important point to review and investigate in order to prevent extended outages in the future. I will let you know if I hear anything. Please also contact me if you hear anything. I did hear about the Saturday meeting, but, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how one views it) I have preexisting commitments at that time.

ReplyI did finally get a response from Assemblywoman DeCroce's office. I asked for a resident, politician, expert, power company commission to review Montville -- in particular the parts of town that are often affected by power outages - to see how the infrastructure can be improved, as well as to review how extraordinary outages can be responded to more quickly. And I volunteered to work with them on this problem. I was told they would let me know if such an initiative could be organized. We'll see if I get a call.

ReplyI think your list is perfect. While I no longer live in Westminster, I visit my mom and brother often, and I love all the same places. I am also thankful for the MD Wine Festival -- it has been a great adventure for me; a place I can bring new friends from around the world and introduce them to my home town. As a Patch freelancer, I believe I learned how to tell a story in Wedtminster, MD, and I learned to write from Mary K Mauer and Barry Gelsinger. GO WHS!

ReplyBaughers is a Westminster icon. I never miss stopping there for fresh produce, particularly corn and peaches, on my way through my hometown. Though I live in NJ now and can't enjoy Baughers' fruits and vegetables as often as I would like, I have to say that Cheryl Dempsey Rose provides a vivid description of the heat with her analogy: "It's so hot in Westminster that Baughers fields are full of popcorn!"
