Yes, Max.....I do see and pay my tax bill the same as you and all other property owners.....not sure why you ask. I am no happier about it than most of us, but there is no logic in your connecting the two.....are you that myopic that you would prefer lower taxes and correspondingly lower performing schools? If, on the other hand, you would simply retort that we should have lower taxes and higher performing schools, than you fail to grasp the realities that are (right or wrong) the current public educational system. I believe in congratulating folks when positive achievements are made, which adds substance to criticisms when failures occur. Gary Lewis

ReplyTerrific job to everyone involved in the school district, teachers and administrators alike! That's a 50% increase from a year ago, assuming the metrics are the same. With all the negativity I hear lately, great to read some upbeat news for a change although I am sure there will be those who will find something horrible about it. Gary Lewis

ReplyI think 'choice' is the best answer......better to have options than not. There are days when a Red Barn soup and some crusty bread is the answer.....other occasions, perhaps the Montville Inn or Don Pepe's. I applaud the arrival of new shopping and dining alternatives. Gary Lewis

ReplyI have to question these reactions......I know I am unable to fire any of my employees (non-union, non-civil service) without going through a process involving Human Resources and employment counsel. To do so exposes my employer to a potential wrongful termination suit and damages. If the University's legal counsel, outside independent investigative law firm, and human resources management all concluded Rice could not be fired under his contract, how is that somehow the fault of the Athletic Director to the extent of demanding his resignation? I don't disagree with those who say Barchi caved in likely to save his own job, but this is a lynching of a genuine good guy in the face of political correctness....nothing more, sorry.

Second tier school academically? That's interesting. I doubt the Big Ten, and more impressively the AAU, would have admitted Rutgers if they were second tier. RU made a commitment when they jumped to big time athletics that they would maintain a high Athletic Academic Performance Rating, which they have led at times and consistently been in the Top 10 nationally. That explains in part why they may not be as successful as some would like. I dare say they are far from second tier academically....in fact, one of the top public research institutions in the country.

ReplyNot raisng sheep, but preparing young men to be the best they can be. Look, no one is accusing Rice of being anti-gay or a bigot....raving, yes, but not racist...just stop that. People are applying a moral righteousness to this that is just inapplicable. The same 'That's okay, Johnny' motivational techniques you see at Rec level sports is already gone by high school, much less college. Now calling college programs 'plantations'.....now that's racist. Rice paid the price, time to move ahead. Gary Lewis

ReplyI guess none of you ever played big-time college athletics.....there's not a whole lot of hugging and Kumbaya going on. This is a classic 'gotcha' case of a fired University employee getting back at a coach who didn't renew his contract. Current and former players alike are saying that this video and remarks are entirely out of context. Rice is a loose cannon, but he paid a pretty stiff penalty in terms of a fine and suspension....let it go already, and who cares what the Star Ledger or Steve Sweeney have to say. This is old news, stick to your guns, Tim! Gary Lewis

ReplyI just wish the Governor would at least acknowledge that there are literally thousands of hard-working local civilian workers who: a] pay a significant portion of their health care, b] do not receive any compensation for unused sick time at retirement, and c] have been paying their full pension contribution year in and year out while the state has not. Stop the vitriol already....I like him, but enough! Villainize the scam artists, but don't throw everyone under the bus.
