Gencarelli's Sticks With Family Recipes Over 30 Years

'If it ain't broke, don't fix it,' Guy Gencarelli says.

Popular dishes at Gencarelli's Ristorante & Pizzeria off Route 46 in the Pine Brook section of Montville include Chicken Dominick, Penne alla Gencarelli and "square pies"—pizzas baked in pans to give them a nice crunch, owner Guy Gencarelli said. Gencarelli's parents opened the restaurant in 1982 and operated it 22 years before their kids took over. Many of the recipes have stayed the same. "Basically, anything we gained from our parents we kept unchanged," Gencarelli said. They use quality ingredients and always make everything fresh, he said. The philosophy: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice: Gencarelli's Ristorante…

Parsippany's Ashia Masters Uptown and Downtown Asian Bites

From Japanese sashimi to Chinese entrees (and Thai too!), Ashia has Asian cuisine covered.

Have you ever experienced the feeling where you crave something to eat but have difficulty boiling the desire down to one specific cuisine? That very thing happened to us not long ago: We had a yen for Asian food, but could not decide whether to go for Chinese cuisine, a favorite, or for Japanese creations, which we find endlessly fascinating?  In the end, the choice was simple: Some will call the Route 46 restaurant Ashia an emporium of Asian fusion cuisine. That is not quite true. The eatery presents Chinese and Japanese cuisine side by side throughout its extensive menu. Patrons can order one, the other or pieces of both—and that makes for a memorably individualized dining experience. Of course, this is Bites Nearby, so our concern here…

Piccolo's Offers Romantic Setting for Delicious Meal

You won't want to skip dessert.

Not all date nights need to be as thrilling as the one depicted in last year's Steve Carrell and Tina Fey movie, Date Night. If you've never seen the movie, what is originally intended to be a quiet night away from the kids turns into a thrilling New York City adventure. The quiet dinner-for-two model, however, is not only appealing to me, but my husband as well. As we debated every local restaurant for our date night last Friday, I recommended Piccolo's Restaurant, in Kinnelon. He had never been there and I, a Kinnelon native, had not been to the Italian restaurant since it was called Lotsa Pasta. Going into the restaurant unsure of what to expect, I can say we had not only a fabulous meal, but we will definitely be back, making Piccolo's…

Panda Wok Answers the Need for Chinese

Parsippany Road eatery offers serviceable Chinese food and some delicious surprises on Christmas Day and every day.

Sometimes Chinese food is the only thing that will do. We experienced that recently when a craving for the Asian cuisine hit hard. The sudden yearning was one that wouldn't dissipate: We wanted Chinese food in large quantities for a little money, and we wanted it right away. Thankfully, we were in the vicinity of a restaurant that we suspected would get the job done: Panda Wok. Located on Parsippany Road in the Green Hill Shopping Center, the easily accessible eatery boasts a neon sign in its window that says carryout is available. While that is true, there are plenty of tables on the inside, so if your jones requires immediate fulfullment, you can satisfy it right there on the premises. Because the restaurant offers the occasional …

Dispatches: The Changing American Dream

Parsippany Deli Fights Tough Times With Lunch Values

After more than 40 years, the Parsippany Road stalwart remains the place where an Irish immigrant works to make his American Dream come true.

Along the bustling throughway that is Parsippany Road stands Edward Hansberry's American Dream. A native of County Waterford, in the southeast of Ireland, Hansberry came to the U.S. as a young man in August 1968. He found Parsippany that year, made it his home and founded a business that has served him and his new community well: the Parsippany Deli. From the same location at 137 Parsippany Road, Hansberry has thrived and struggled over the past four decades plus.  "I had a dream when I came to America," he said. "It was this business, making it a success. I planned to retire when I was 59. That's come and gone now, but we're still going," he said. "Nowadays, it's getting tougher. There is a lot more ethnic variety in Parsippany now, which…

Vitale's Deli and Trattoria: Two Eateries in One

Parsippany restaurant offers deli and subs by day and, three nights a week, presents sumptuous Italian cuisine.

What time do you want your bite to eat?  Most days, Vitale's Deli is simply that--an Italian deli. Its varied menu bears this out, presenting items one would expect to see, including homemade pizza pies, subs, panini sandwiches, sloppy joes, Italian hot dogs, burgers and hot deli classics like corned beef and pastrami sandwiches From Thursday through Saturday each week, however, the deli becomes a trattoria. A new menu tells a tale of nighttime gastronomic glory, featuring a full selection of appetizers, salads and mouth-watering Italian entrees. It's two - two - two eateries in one. Because of its dual nature and its frankly terrific food, we've chosen Vitale's Deli and Trattoria as this week's Bites Nearby. Located in a strip mall on …

Walker's Deli a Quick Stop for a Bite

Deli serves Red's Rhode Island Chicken.

While we wouldn't advise walking there, Walker's Deli seems to be somewhat of a hot spot amongst tri-boro residents for those looking for a sandwich, hot or cold, or morning bagel and cup of coffee. Located on Hamburg Turnpike in Bloomingdale, the deli is on the way to many local highways including Route 23 and Route 287. Because of its convenience, we've chosen Walker's Deli as this week's Bites Nearby. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice: Walker's Deli-The deli is decorated to have an almost 1950's appeal with black and white checkered flooring and license plates from several states hanging on the walls. Of note is a license plate that actually says "…

Paul's Diner Offers the Taste of Home

Located just outside Parsippany in Mountain Lakes, Paul's is this week's pick for Bites Nearby.

It has been a long time--years, really--since a traditional diner exceeded our expectations. Oh, there have been some keepers, to be sure, but the duds exist too, and they tend to linger in the memory. Really, is there much in the food world that is worse than a so-so or horrid diner meal? So when we tried the cream of turkey soup at Paul's Diner, we were ready to be underwhelmed. We were anything but. The very first taste won us over thanks to its deeply flavorful cream broth, plump and tender grains of rice and tasty bits of turkey. It was home and comfort and mother love in a bowl.   "This didn't come in a can, did it?" I asked the server. "Nope it's homemade, like pretty much everything here," she said. Every bite we enjoyed reinforced…

Can't Beat Breakfast at the Spa Restaurant

The Lake Hiawatha diner does fine lunches and dinners, but the morning meal—available all day—is the real eyeopener.

Mention the Spa Restaurant in Lake Hiawatha, and you're sure to get comments. "Have you tried the cream soups?" "You can't miss breakfast at the Spa." After months of hearing people recommend the place, the time came to check out the Parsippany eatery. And what do you know? The commenters are right. The Spa is a traditional diner setting that offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, take-out and specials. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice: The Spa is well-loved for its homey breakfast platters, but we wanted to know if the restaurant makes for good post-breakfast bites. On one occasion, we decided to try something from a list of daily dinner specials, typical …
