Montville Township Committee will consider refunding fees paid for storm-related construction inspection.
The Montville Township Committee will consider refunding residents who paid inspection fees for construction on storm-related damage to their properties Tuesday night. Committee members will discuss introducing an ordinance that, if adopted, would also allow residents to complete construction work without having to pay the township for inspection until Jan. 13. "Should anyone need to get permits because of storm-related damages, we'll waive those fees," Township Administrator Victor Canning said earlier this month. Committeeman Scott Gallopo clarified the intent of the ordinance at the Nov. 13 meeting. "The waiver is for permits to fix damages from the storm and not for somebody remodeling their bathroom," he said. According to the drafted…

One in five residents said they felt forced out of their homes by the storm.
Superstorm Sandy made an impact on approximately two-thirds of the state, according to results from a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday. An even higher percentage (94 percent) of the 1,228 polled New Jersey residents reported that they lost power at some point during or after the storm. About 65 percent of those polled said they remained without power for at least five days. "Two-thirds of New Jersey residents were affected when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the Garden State three weeks ago," a press release about the poll said. Approximately one in five residents said they were forced out of their homes by the storm, with about 6 percent of residents telling pollsters they were still not able to permanently return. "We already …

Montville officials begin devising communication plan for weather events while resident volunteers to help.
After having been through two tropical storms in two years, Montville officials have an idea of what is needed to continue to improve the township's response to large-scale weather events. Suggestions made by the public were gathered and taken into consideration beginning with a special meeting on Nov. 10. Some of the ideas offered that day have already been put into action, as Township Administrator Victor Canning told the township committee on Nov. 13 that he has looked into one issue already where Sprint customers were unable to receive Nixle alerts on their phones. Of the suggestions offered, many residents had said they wished the township communicated better after the storm. Resident Anjana Kapur took time away from celebrating …

About one million New Jersey residents and 43.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving weekend, AAA New Jersey predicts. The impact of Hurricane Sandy is still uncertain, especially in the mid-Atlantic and northeast regions. Cathleen Lewis, the director of Public Affairs for AAA New Jersey, said, "While many residents [of New Jersey] may cancel travel plans, many others may change travel plans to accommodate or assist displaced friends and family." How will we get there? Sandy may influence how New Jerseyans will travel this holiday. As Lewis said, "Rental cars have become a coveted commodity by those who lost vehicles in the storm.” AAA recommends confirming any existing reservations for a rental car with the …

Pine Brook Dunkin Donuts had record sales as owner welcomed those seeking warmth.
The Pine Brook Dunkin Donuts typically sees a steady stream of customers as the only coffee and donut chain store of its kind in Montville. But in the days immediately following Superstorm Sandy, the store, located at 36 Route 46, became somewhat of a shelter for those seeking refuge from homes without power and looking for a place to plug in. Franchisee and Owner Nita Panchal said in the three days immediately following the storm's landfall on Oct. 29, the store recorded four times the amount of sales than in an average week. The line of customers wrapped around the building, which also houses a mattress store and pizza restaurant. Inside, some customers sat for hours working on laptops after Panchal said power strips were plugged in to …

From bringing hot meals to waiting hours in line to get gas for their neighbor's generator, the LoGrassos made an impact on those around them after Superstorm Sandy.
For days, and in most cases, weeks, without power, Superstorm Sandy tested the patience of many area residents. But it also joined neighbors together, helping each other through the challenges that not only the storm, but its aftermath, brought. This was particularly true for a group of neighbors who live on Brook Valley Road, where the borders of Kinnelon and Montville meet. Winding, thin roads lined by trees lead to the Kinnelon home of Edie Gaetjens, whose husband, Larry, died the day Sandy made landfall in New Jersey. Larry Gaetjens turned 84 on Oct. 29 and died that afternoon from a heart attack while he was outside just hours before the storm came. "He was just an awesome guy. It's just a great loss," next-door neighbor Donna Marie …

Superstorm Sandy was no ordinary storm and, as such, produced some larger than normal brush items. Montville Township is making accomodations to help residents dispose of the large items and has agreed to pick them up, with Section 1 scheduled for Monday and Section 2 scheduled on Tuesday. Typically, brush must be bundled so that each bundle can be handled by just one person, with branches not exceeding 4 inches in diameter, according to township code. Maximum bundle size is ordinarily limited to 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length and should not weigh more than 50 lbs. But with the exceptions the township is making because of the storm, residents will be able to place larger brush items to the curb for collection. "We ask that you reduce…
