Towaco Crossing on Schedule to Be Completed Next Fall

Developers will price retail units beginning in February.

Driving on either side of the Towaco train station, it's hard to miss the large building starting to take shape next door. That building is the Towaco Crossing development that broke ground last spring. Included in the project is 1,200 feet of space for six retail businesses and six residential units and the development's centerpiece, an 18,000-foot restaurant called Rails Steakhouse. April's groundbreaking was an important day for many elected officials as the development is planned to become a "destination" in Montville. The project, even currently in its construction phase and continuing after the establishments are open, is expected to bring dozens of jobs to the local area. Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce said projects like Towaco …

Towaco Crossing Construction Coming Along

Progress continues on retail and restaurant development.

As the summer heat beats on, construction workers are continuing work on the Towaco Crossing development at the Towaco Train Station. As of this week, the structure of a wall for at least part of the development could be seen coming from the ground. Ground was broken on the project, which includes an 18,000-foot restaurant, 1,200 feet of retail space and six residential units, in April. The restaurant included in the development is Rails, an upscale steakhouse inspired by an 1888 Colorado inn which will feature artwork and design elements that model western American grand railroad hotels. Log purchased in Oregon will be used to support the building structure. Several local, county and state officials are excited about the project and are …

Architect Brings Vision to Towaco Crossing

Architect Anthony Garrett is hoping to bring old school railroad essence to Montville.

A new steakhouse is rolling into Towaco and Montville residents will soon be all aboard for a new shopping and dining experience at the Towaco train station. Known as Rails, the upscale eatery is scheduled to open for business in 2013 and is bringing with it a 44,000-square foot mixed-use facility called Towaco Crossing. In addition to the restaurant, the long and narrow building is designed to house up to six retail stores and six residential units. Inspired by the 1888 inn at Glenwood Hot Springs in Colorado, the stone and timber structure will incorporate details reminiscent of grand railroad hotels throughout the American west. “There will be a 30-foot, 30-inch in diameter log penetrating both floors of the restaurant,” the project’s …

So impressed to see that Mr. Garrett is inspired by the historic rail hotels of the old west in creating this structure. Some local rail history--many years ago, our Dad worked the mail car for the U.S. Postal Service on the trains that traveled this rail line. Just great to see the comeback of the old train stations. I wish Mr. Garrett could get someone to take on renovation of the Boonton …   more ›

What Would You Like to See at Towaco Crossing?

Economic Development Committee hoping to collect resident input.

The ground has been broken at Towaco Crossing and several developments are already underway, including the 18,000-foot Rails Steakhouse restaurant. Developers are hoping to attract six retail businesses (in addition to six residential units) at the project site at the Towaco train station. But the township's Economic Development Committee (EDC) is interested in hearing what residents feel should be developed there. Montville Township Committeeman Jim Sandham, liaison to the EDC, told the committee at the May 22 meeting that the EDC had met with a few developers who inquired about the interests of the residents. "We entertained and heard from three different developers who are working within the Towaco center area and they're very …

Ground Broken on Towaco Railway Development

Local and state officials are confident Towaco Crossing will spur economic development for Morris County.

Local Montville, county and state officials were "all aboard" on a project to develop land near the Towaco train station into a bustling business district and saw the beginning stages of their vision come to fruition Wednesday during a groundbreaking ceremony on Towaco Crossing and Rails Steakhouse. Developers of Towaco Crossing, LLC, invited politicians, relatives and friends to the site where the 18,000-foot restaurant, six retail businesses (taking up 1,200 feet) and six residential units are being built. Speakers of note at the event included state Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce (District 26), Morris County Freeholders Tom Mastrangelo and Hank Lyon, Montville Township Mayor Tim Braden and Montville Township Committeeman Jim Sandham. …

Let's see, they tore down the general store on the corner of Route 202 when the Quick Check opened in what is now the Real Estate office next to the post office and also because there wasn't enough traffic. Then the strip mall the Quick Check is in was built and the Quick Check immediately moved to where there was more traffic flow. Next, there used to be stores exactly where the restaurant is …   more ›
