5 Billion Gallons of Sewage Overflowed to N.J. Post-Sandy, Report Says

18 of 20 largest sewage spills in the northeast were reported in New Jersey and New York.

New Jersey saw approximately 5.1 billion gallons of untreated or partially treated sewage flow into waterways in the weeks and months following Superstorm Sandy, according to new data released by Climate Central. In total, the eight states hardest-hit by the storm had 11 billion gallons flow into canals, rivers and bays. "To put that in perspective, 11 billion gallons is equal to New York’s Central Park stacked 41 feet high with sewage, or more than 50 times the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The vast majority of that sewage flowed into the waters of New York City and northern New Jersey in the days and weeks during and after the storm," the Climate Central report said. Data included in the report was compiled from state agencies and …

Sidewalk Maintenance Ordinance Could Be Amended in Montville

Township officials take closer look at who is responsible for maintaining sidewalks even after major storms.

After discussion on the topic spanned two township committee meetings, the Montville Township administration is working with department heads and lawyers to look into amending the township's ordinance as it relates to sidewalk maintenance to be more clear. The township's sidewalk maintenance ordinance became a topic of discussion after committee members considered paying for repairs for about 50 property owners whose sidewalks were damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Ultimately, the township committee members decided they felt that property owners should be responsible for the maintenance, but the committee members also agreed that the ordinance that states who is responsible is not entirely clear on the topic. At the April 2 township committee …

Let the home owner remove the trees the town planted and have the town pay for some of the sidewalk repairs. The town wants you to get permits to remove the trees but wants nothing to do with paying for their mistakes. The trees in this town are all over grown and JCP&L cuts them so they look horrible once the leaves fall off.   more ›

Communication Key JCP&L Issue in Sandy, Residents Said

They say the use of smartphones would have been a big help during the storm.

Communication was the key element missing in the days following Superstorm Sandy, residents said at a meeting with JCP&L executives Friday. Bridgewater resident Neha Limaye Pallod—who arranged the meeting and was joined by a few members of a statewide Facebook group she started to make JCP&L answer for its response to power outages in November—said the lack of information on a street level is where the system was truly flawed. Pallod and other residents met with JCP&L officials at their Morristown headquarters, and she said many made recommendations about how to fix communication for the future. Click here to read our Cover-It-Live story of live tweets from the meeting. “Calls are not getting logged correctly,” she said. “Reporting outages…

Tree-Trimming in Public Streets Should Not Be Residents' Responsibility, Twp. Committee Says

Municipality plans to send letters to property owners reminding them sidewalk maintenance is their responsibility.

Sidewalk maintenance may be a property owner's responsibility, but the majority of Montville Township Committee members feel tree maintenance within a township right of way should not be after the idea of having residents foot the bill for maintaining damaged trees in sidewalks was rejected at the March 12 meeting. The committee continued discussion on sidewalk maintenance after initially agreeing not to fund repairs to sidewalks damaged by Superstorm Sandy at the Feb. 26 meeting. While it is standard that maintaining sidewalks in front of a property owner's home is his or her responsibility, the committee has discussed how in the past, the township has funded repairs to sidewalks damaged by major storms. On Feb. 26, committee members …

My neighbor has a tree that needs to have it's gigantic limb cut down! It has been shaped the way it is because of the electrical lines. Other parts of that tree are on my house!! I have nonchalantly spoken to the neighbors about it and she said, "I used to get up there and cut the branch down but I haven't in a while." Uh...I am afraid that one day while walking outside or in a storm that it's …   more ›

Additional Snow Days Planned for Under 2013-14 School Calendar

Board discusses bringing students in on Columbus, MLK, Presidents Day if snow day makeups are needed next year.

The Montville Township Public Schools Board of Education is taking a proactive approach with the 2013-14 school calendar and agreed last week to bring students to school on days previously scheduled as off if needed to accommodate additional snow days. This could mean that depending on how many snow days are used before then, students could attend school on Columbus Day (Oct. 14), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 20) and Presidents Day (Feb. 17) next year. Discussion on the topic at the March 5 school board meeting centered around the conditions of the current year, in which Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Fried said the district had only planned for four snow, or "emergency," days but ended up using many more because of Superstorm …

What a slippery slope this could be. I will say, I appreciate the fact that we have off during "Holy Week".... and for the past few years, the board has set the calendar to give us a week off right around Easter/Passover which have coincided with one another. What happens in a few years when due to the calendar, Easter and Passover are several weeks apart. Which week will win out? Easter/Holy …   more ›

Sandy Sidewalk Repair Funds Rejected By Twp. Committee

Officials say policy must be streamlined to more clearly state who is responsible for repairs after emergency situations.

Township officials voted last week against appropriating $55,000 for a bond to repair sidewalks damaged by Superstorm Sandy.  Typically, a property owner is responsible for maintaining the sidewalk in front of his or her home. However, the discussion arose at the Montville Township Committee's Feb. 26 meeting as the township has previously funded similar repairs following destructive storms such as Sandy. Ultimately, the ordinance was rejected with Committeeman Scott Gallopo, Committeeman Don Kostka and Mayor Tim Braden voting against the bond ordinance. Since the money to repay the township debt incurred by the bond would be paid with taxpayer dollars, some expressed that they did not believe it was fair to fund repair projects that would…

JCP&L Outage Info Available Through New App

Downloadable app comes after customers demand better communication following Superstorm Sandy.

The parent company of Jersey Central Power and Light is touting its new mobile phone app, which the company says could be helpful during times of power outages. The app launched by FirstEnergy Corp. is free for its customers in the five states the company's utilities serve, and offers quicker access to outage maps, simplified reporting of outages, and access to personal account information. “Our new smartphone app and mobile website make it easier for our customers to stay in touch with us and conduct every-day transactions when they’re on the go, whether it’s reporting a power outage or paying a bill,” Ronald I. Green, vice president of Customer Service, said. “The new tools also make our simple and secure online bill payment programs …

They are trimming trees by me...the same line they continue to trim, slash, and clear cut every other year that supplies the county (although they claim "every 4 years"). The local lines along Waughaw road, which haven't been touched in over 15 years, remain overgrown and dangerously "un" maintained. When the subject is broached, the answer is (as it has been for the past 15 years): "They're …   more ›

Emergency Planning Committee Formed In Response to Sandy

Township seeking volunteers to make recommendations for how Montville should handle future storms.

Montville residents spoke after Superstorm Sandy and township officials listened. But now they want to hear more from residents about what kind of response is necessary following major emergency events such as the October storm. As dozens of residents remained without power, township officials hosted a special meeting to gain input from residents on how advanced preparation for the storm and communication and resources during and following Sandy could be improved. After gathering recommendations made by the public at the meeting, Township Administrator Victor Canning presented the township committee with a post-storm assessment including action items to address the issues raised. One of those recommendations is now being carried out as the…

Chris Christie: The New Boss?

Governor hailed as hero following Sandy, says he's 'more ready' to consider presidential run.

Gov. Chris Christie has been considered by some legislators and constituents to be somewhat of a hero for his response and leadership following Superstorm Sandy. But now that the storm has passed, the governor is looking toward the future and a potential run for presidency, according to a Time magazine article, "The Boss," about the state's leader. As Republicans look to place a strong candidate in the 2016 presidential election, Christie may be their choice. But state Democratic leaders said there is much the governor has still not delivered on during his tenure. Despite rumors that he was planning to run for president in 2012, Christie publicly announced several times over that he did not have intentions to run. Now months later, after …

Post-Sandy Generosity Honored With Special Montville Package

Mayor, committee members send 'thank you' package to community leaders for donating food following Superstorm Sandy.

A few t-shirts, some baseball caps, copies of the township magazine and a big, brass key. But not just any key. A key to Montville Township. Those are just some of the items being packed inside a brown box and shipped to Montville, Conn. as part of a "thank you" package for officials in gratitude for their communitty's donations to Montville, N.J., following Superstorm Sandy. Montville Patch (Connecticut) Editor Ellyn Santiago placed a donation bin at her town's municipal building soliciting food, cleaning supplies and other items. Once collected, the donations were sent to the Montville, N.J., shelter set up by the township's employees. The six boxes of donated items arrived and were opened at the Senior House on Nov. 7. Included in the …
