Creative Studio Will Help 'Exceptional' Children Express Themselves

Local organization receives $35K grant to expand programs in new space.

Participants in the Pathways for Exceptional Children programs will soon have a new space to let their creativity grow after the organization recently received a grant to purchase space for a creative studio. Pathways has the former Montville Township Board of Education offices in mind for the studio space, although nothing has been finalized yet. Founder Melinda Jennis said she thinks the studio should be open by the end of the month, at which point a grand opening will be held. Jennis said the Montville-based organization was awarded a $35,000 grant from the Kessler Foundation, which works to provide employment opportunities to people with disabilities. Pathways promotes inclusion of children of all abilities and ages through more than …

Pathways Celebrates 10 Years Promoting Inclusion for Children

Program that began for children with disabilities now teaches all children about including others and leadership.

For ten years, Pathways for Exceptional Children, a Montville-based program that promotes inclusion of children of all abilities in activities and programs, has been inspiring kids. Pathways will be celebrating its decade anniversary on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the back parking lot of Montville Township High School with special performances from several kids involved in the program, carnival-type activities and more. Melinda Jennis, president of Pathways, said she started the organization because of her personal experiences with her multiply disabled son. Pathways Kids Learn Touchdown Dance [VIDEO]

Montville's former football coach teamed up with Pathways for Exceptional Children to start a football program that paired high school athletes with children who have disabilities.

A dozen children and young adults with disabilities took part in a new five-week football program held at Montville Township High School this fall that paired them with high school student buddies, mostly members of the football team. They studied the difference between offense and defense. They stretched and ran the 20-yard dash. They practiced passing, punting and receiving, all under the direction of Gerry Gallagher, a high school physical education teacher and former college and high school football coach who retired as Montville's head coach last year. Gallagher teamed up this fall with Pathways for Exceptional Children to start a football program that paired high school athletes with children who have disabilities. Gallagher said he …
