Volunteers to return to Passaic Valley Road site to continue renovations for local groups' new home.
Volunteers are continuing to put the finishing touches on renovations to a Passaic Valley Road property known as the "Little House" so that three local groups can move in and make the house a home. Once completed, the house will be used by the Montville Township Recreation Department, the Montville Kiwanis Food Pantry and the Montville Police Explorers program. Currently, the food pantry is using space at the Montville United Methodist Church but does not have enough room for storage and the Explorers are using the police station for training, although coordinator Frank Cooney said it would be better to be out of officers' way in a separate facility. The house, which was built in the 1940s, has been vacant for some time after being used …

Montville kids will have a chance to treat more than trick this weekend as the township is planning to host a safe trick-or-treating event that will include a donation drive for those who remain without power. The "Scare, Share and Care" event will be held Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Montville Township High School parking lot. For the "scare" part of the event, kids will be able to dress in costume and "trick-or-trunk," or visit parked cars filled with candy, in the parking lot of the high school. The township decided this would be safer than children traveling door-to-door, as many trees and wires remained down from Tropical Storm Sandy. Children will need supervision, however, as the Montville Township Recreation Department has…

Gary Henzel was honored by the Montville Township Committee Tuesday.
Gary Henzel had an impact on Montville, both as a resident and a basketball coach for one of the township's Recreation Department teams. Henzel, who passed away in August 2011, was honored by the Montville Township Committee Tuesday for his dedication and service to his community. "Gary spent his years teaching and mentoring students and fellow educators with many lessons in sports, academics and life," according to a proclamation read by committee members at Tuesday's meeting. Henzel lived in Montville but taught as a physical education teacher in Union City before retiring in 2007. He coached basketball for several years. Mary Jo Coan coached alongside Henzel for one year during the 2010-11 season and said he was a pleasure to work with…

Volunteers, organizations to pick up litter throughout township.
The Montville Township Annual Fall Clean Up Day will be held Saturday, with volunteers taking time to pick up litter throughout the township. "This is a community effort to make Montville Township 'litter free' with a fall clean up of public roads, properties and parks," according to the Montville Township Recreation Department, which sponsors the event. Local families and civic groups will come together to participate in the event at 9 a.m. Those who registered by the Sept. 11 deadline will receive specific assignments for sections in the township that need clean up work, including roadways, parks and open space properties. The volunteers will clean for one to two hours and will be given gloves, bags and grabbers to assist them. According…

As Montville continues to discuss recreational amenities, we want to know which you would like the most.
Recreational opportunities often seem to be a topic of conversation in Montville Township. Montville already has a community park, a dog park and is looking to create new recreational amenities in underutilized spaces in the township, such as new community gardens like the one on Indian Lane East. Recreation space is also being considered for the newly acquired "Marketplace" property, though discussions are in the preliminary phase, and in the Metro Park complex on Changebridge Road. At Metro Park, some are hoping that a roller rink is installed, as well as an outdoor skate park. Funding would need to be made available for any of the recreational amenity projects to move forward, but the Montville Township Recreation Department also offers…

Really nice for the town to put this together, but really? One hour?? All the kids in town and they're given one hour?? I have kids and I know how pushy some parents can be when they want something for their kids. I can just imagine the mob scene. I may skip it. Has anyone been to the Easter Egg Hunt? Parents knocking over little kids and grabbing up the eggs to make sure their kids have a full …   more ›
