On March 18, Cedar Hill Elementary School teacher Cathy Lundquist traveled to Rider College to accept the New Jersey Alliance for Social, Emotional and Character Development’s designation as an “Emerging School of Character.” Cedar Hill School was among three schools in the state to earn this distinction. The award was bestowed upon the school for complying with the Alliance’s Character Education Partnership’s “Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education.” Upon consideration of Cedar Hill’s application, the Partnership determined that the school has demonstrated an outstanding character …

Morris County CrimeStoppers is hoping to help Montville Township Public Schools get to the bottom of who was responsible for three separate bomb threats to Montville schools in one week earlier this month by offering a $1,000 reward for information, according to NJ.com. The first bomb threat, on March 5, was written and found inside the Robert R. Lazar Middle School, causing a school evacuation as local police and county officials searched the school. In what Montville Township Police Capt. Rudy Appelmann called a "copycat" incident, Cedar Hill Elementary School was evacuated on March 8 after a similar threat was made. The following Monday, Hilldale Elementary School was also evacuated for a written threat found on a bathroom wall. …

Dance China NY presents Peking Opera folk numbers to Montville school.
William Mason School students recently got a chance to experience a special performance by Dance China NY. "Performing in traditional Chinese costumes, Dance China NY introduces students to Chinese culture through language lessons, historical background, on-stage demonstrations and audience interaction," according to Betsy Steckelman, media liaison for the William Mason School Home and School Association. Dance China NY is a resident dance company of the New York Chinese Cultural Center and made up of dancers from America and China. Dancers perform traditional folk numbers from Peking Opera as well as acrobatic numbers. Montville Township Public Schools spreading cheer through district website.
Montville Township Public Schools has come up with a new way to share good news from around the school district. Previously, the board of education would print the "good news" about students from each of the district schools in school board agendas and Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried would read aloud the news as part of his report during board meetings. At the March 5 meeting, Fried asked what board members thought of the news instead being posted on the district website and not read aloud. According to the first list of good news posted, Woodmont School students raised $2,000 for the Restore the Shore foundation through t-shirt sales, more than 50 Hilldale Elementary School students completed at least six hours of reading for the Six Flags…

Student achievement, growth commended in Montville elementary school.
Valley View Elementary School has been named a high-performing "Reward School" by the state Department of Education. The Montville elementary school was included in a list of 57 Reward Schools throughout the state released this month. Last year, 112 schools were selected as Reward Schools. "A Reward School is a school with outstanding student achievement or growth over the past three years," according to a description provided by the state DOE. The two types of Reward Schools include high-performing, which indicates the school has a high level of schoolwide proficiency and graduation rates, and high-progress, which indicates the school has a high level of student growth, as measured by their median Student Growth Percentiles. Board discusses bringing students in on Columbus, MLK, Presidents Day if snow day makeups are needed next year.
The Montville Township Public Schools Board of Education is taking a proactive approach with the 2013-14 school calendar and agreed last week to bring students to school on days previously scheduled as off if needed to accommodate additional snow days. This could mean that depending on how many snow days are used before then, students could attend school on Columbus Day (Oct. 14), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 20) and Presidents Day (Feb. 17) next year. As Montville Township Public Schools saw its third bomb threat in a district school within one week Monday at Hilldale Elementary School, district officials and local police officers have gathered to develop ways to educate students in grades 3-8 against the dangers and consequences of making such threats and asked parents to talk to their kids at home. Students safely waited on buses while school was cleared Thursday, police said.
Just days after another district school was evacuated because of a bomb threat, Cedar Hill Elementary School students were also evacuated because of a similar threat, according to Montville Township Police Capt. Rudy Appelmann. The students were safely placed on school buses, as part of the school's evacuation plan, around 11:20 a.m. while officials determined whether they should be bussed to another location, Appelmann said. Ultimately, the buses did not leave the parking lot and students were able to return within about 20 minutes. Board considers three proposals for rearranging times of all district schools.
Upon the request of Montville Township Board of Education members, Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried presented two more options Tueday for rearranging times at district schools to shorten the Robert R. Lazar Middle School day. Board members have been discussing shortening the Lazar day for more than a year based on recommendations of parents so that the students could have more time after school to get their homework done and participate in extra-curricular activities without staying up too late. Currently, students dismiss at 3:40 p.m. from Lazar.
