Advocate blogs about ethics complaint he says he sent because the Montville Library Board's attorney is giving 'false legal advice' on restricting pornography.
The attorney for the Montville Township Public Library Board and a retired attorney who advocates for informing libraries they may block pornography on their computers offer different advice on whether public libraries must turn off Internet filters at an adult patron's request. But a recent situation in which a man viewed pornography on a township library computer did not hinge on the filter being turned off at his request, board attorney Ann Grossi said Wednesday. He simply got around the filter that's already in place. The library board's technology committee is looking at ways to strengthen the filter as one of the ways the board may address the issue, she said. Trustees question whether restricting access to pornographic content would be a violation of rights.
One library patron's actions in viewing pornography on a public computer at the Montville Township Public Library not only elicited complaints from other patrons but also has prompted employees to question what they are legally able to do about it. A subcommittee of the library's board of trustees met Thursday to discuss the incident that initiated concerns. More than one complaint has been lodged about the same person, a man, watching pornographic videos on the library computers. In the most recent complaint, on April 8, a mother and her teenage daughter were walking past the screen the man was viewing and noticed what he was watching, which she also said was visible from the children's section. Bellitto, of Kean University, will present a lecture series on Ancient Rome at the Montville Township Library beginning April 4 at 12:30 p.m. Lecture topics include “Rome: Monarchy, Republic, and Carthage’s Enemy;” “Julius Caesar’s Revolution;” and “Roman Pagans, Jews and Christians.” Dr. Bellitto is the History Department Chair at Kean University where he teaches courses on the ancient world and medieval Europe. Chinese decorating principles will be taught by field expert.
The Montville Township Public Library will be hosting a program on the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui on March 22. During the program, which will begin at 1 p.m., Michelle Zanoni will explain the Feng Shui design principles and how to decorate your home. Zanoni is a graduate of the Feng Shui Alliance, having studied with experts and global scholars on the subject. "This class will empower you to bring positive energy, balance and harmony to your life," according to a press release for the event. The Montville Township Public Library will be hosting Diane Lang, a therapist, educator and author, who will talk about using positive parenting skills to promote a healthy lifestyle for children during a lecture March 7. The talk will be held at 1 p.m. at the library. "Ms. Lang will discuss how to raise optimistic and resilient children by using 'positive psychology' as a foundation," according to a description of the program sent by the library. "She will talk about what personality traits can be learned, what you should be teaching your child, how to model positive behavior, and how to maintain the type of home environment that will encourage your child toward a positive lifestyle." Local author Danusha Goska will talk about her book, Send Save Delete, during a program at the Montville Township Public Library on Feb. 13. The book "is the memoir of the relationship between the author and a famous atheist author/radio talk show host," according to a press release. "The relationship begins with a debate conducted via email about the existence of God and evolves to a serious, intimate, connection," the release said.
