Teen Suggestions Wanted by Montville Library

Advisory board being formed to consider interests of teens and tweens at Montville Township Public Library.

The Montville Township Public Library is hoping to form an advisory committee made up of young adults to make suggestions on how the library can better service teens and tweens. The young adults, from grades 6 through 12, are invited to join the "Teen/Tween Advisory Board." The board will help library employees decide which books, movies and video games to offer that would appeal to that age group, as well as helping the library plan activities that would appeal to them. "Should we bring in an expert to speak about a specific topic? Should we have gaming afternoons in the Pio Costa Auditorium? How about a Hunger Games movie night? International Violinist to Perform in Montville

The Montville Township Public Library will be hosting classical violinist David Podles on Sept. 23. Podles is an acclaimed International Concert violinist who began playing at age 7. He is the winner of three international violin competitions and has performed in symphony, chamber, ballet and opera orchestras at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Bolshoi and Kirov (in the former Soviet Union) music halls. Podles' Montville appearance is part of the "Concerts in the Pio Costa" series and will include classical pieces which have highlighted his career. Montville Library Will Soon Offer eBooks

Patrons would check out electronic items similar to how traditional books are borrowed.

The Montville Township Library is making an effort to cater to tech savvy readers as it moves toward offering eBooks in the near future. Library Director Allan Kleiman spoke about the initiative during the Aug. 13 Montville Township Library Board of Trustees meeting. He said about half of the eBooks available will be for the Nook and half will be for the Kindle, while eBooks will also be available for iPad owners. In addition to offering the eBooks, the library will also help educate patrons on using the new eReader technologies. "We're going to start doing some classes in the fall," Kleiman said. Shared Parking Lot Considered for Library, High School

Library board discusses multi-use parking lot while considering potential solar project.

With the Montville Township Public Library and Montville Township High School on adjoining properties, finding parking for one or the other can be, at times, challenging. At least according to those who use the lots and residents and business owners near the high school who have complained of students parking on their properties. Montville Township Public Library Board of Trustees Member Robert Lefkowitz mentioned the concerns of those residents Monday before suggesting the library board and Montville Township Public Schools Board of Education consider working together to construct a multi-purpose parking lot for use by both buildings' drivers. Spooky Speaker to Talk at Montville Library

Gordon Thomas Ward to speak at library on Aug. 22.

Gordon Thomas Ward believes ghosts are real and exist in New Jersey. Ward, the author of Ghosts of Central New Jersey: Historic Haunts of Somerset Hills and A Bit of Earth, will speak about his experiences investigating so-called haunted locations and show library patrons evidence of his research during a presentation at the Montville Township Library on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. In the presentation, "Ghosts: What They Are and How to Investigate Them," Ward will also teach attendees how to investigate what they believe to be hauntings without having to spend money on sound equipment. Author to Talk Rock and Roll at Montville Library

As part of the Montville Township Public Library’s popular Local Author Series, on July 25 at 7 p.m., local author William Westhoven will lead an informative discussion on the “History of Rock and Roll Seen Through Fiction.”  Westhoven is an award-winning journalist, editor and newspaper columnist who has covered the performing arts since 1989. His interview subjects range from show-business legends such as Bob Hope, Dick Clark and Les Paul to dozens of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees.  Westhoven is the author of Eric Clapton: Career of a Rock Legend. His widely acclaimed first novel, One-Hit Willie: A Classic Rock Novel, was published in 2011.  The discussion will be held in the Pio Costa Auditorium at the Montville Township Library…

Local Author Speaks at Library

Former Montville author explains hidden meaning behind 'City in Shadow.'

Local author, Evan Marshall, who lived in Montville for many years, came to the Montville Township Library's Tuesday afternoon book club. He wrote "City in Shadow," which was the July read for the book club. He talked about all his books and how he came to write them. "City in Shadow" takes place in New York City in the sanitation department. He explained many of the "hidden" places in New York which are all incorporated in his book.   The Tuesday afternoon book club meets the first Tuesday of every month. Local Author to Visit Montville Library

Author of 'City in Shadow' to visit on July 10.

Local author Evan Marshall will visit the Montville Library on July 10 at 1 p.m. to discuss his latest novel, City in Shadow.    According to the description on Marshall's website, "Sanitation supervisor Anna Winthrop searches for the killer of a mysterious young woman who was held against her will. A frightened woman leaves a note on the street outside Anna's apartment. "Help me," it says, and Anna sets out to find her. She spots her dining with a famous doctor, then in Grand Central Station, running for a train. But each time, the woman vanishes before Anna can reach her. Snakes-n-Scales to Help Library Kick off Summer Program

Children will learn about creatures of the night.

The Montville Township Library will be kicking off its summer reading program with help from a few scaly and slithery friends. The library will be hosting Snakes-n-Scales, an organization that rescues reptiles and travels with them to libraries, schools and birthday parties to educate children on their lifestyles, as they present "The Night Belongs to Us," a program about creatures of the night. The program is being held on June 16 at 11 a.m. at the Pio Costa Auditorium. Children will learn about how certain animals hunt, navigate and merely survive at night. To register, call 973-402-0900.
