Board president speaks about government's impact on public education at Montville graduation ceremony.
Though high school will officially be a memory for the Montville Township High School Class of 2012, speakers at Thursday night's commencement ceremony encouraged graduates to be inspired by what they learned throughout their years of education in Montville and strive for more than just good test scores in college. Valedictorian Farrah Liu spoke about an empty trophy case in the high school lobby that is only empty because the trophies are currently being cleaned. She asked her fellow classmates to seek passions in life so that even if they do not have something physical to show for their accomplishments, they know they have done a great deal. "I hope that our dream is and will always be real," Liu said. She also reminded her classmates …
Warm summer weather did not stop smiles and cheers during commencement ceremony Thursday.
Half a ton of ice and hundreds of water bottles were donated by community organizations and people for Thursday night's Montville Township High School Class of 2012 commencement ceremony. But the sweltering temperature had no bearing on a night of reflection of student accomplishments, excitement for the future and pride over time well-spent in the Montville Township Public Schools district. Three hundred and fifty one students graduated from the high school Thursday, according to Board of Education President Dr. Karen Cortellino's speech, with those students completing a total of more than 16,000 hours in a classroom, high school Principal Doug Sanford said. Neville Dusaj said classmates should focus on what they enjoy.
Neville Dusaj came to the Montville Township school system in fourth grade. The high school senior lives on the border of Towaco and Lincoln Park, plays the viola and piano outside of school, enjoys tennis, skiing and travel, and volunteers regularly at his family’s Zoroastrian Temple in Suffern, NY. Dusaj, 17, is also the Montville Township High School (MTHS) Class of 2012 salutatorian. “It was never really to get to a certain rank,” Dusaj said about his academic goals and achievement of the number two spot in his class of 352 students. “It was just to do whatever I can in my classes and see what happens.” With a love of science, Dusaj has taken mostly science classes during his high school career. “[Science] comes naturally to me, almost…

Liu fulfills a lifelong dream by learning from those around her.
When Farrah Liu was a third grade student at Montville Township’s Hilldale Elementary School, her teacher, Tammy Minsky, predicted Liu would be the valedictorian of her high school graduating class. Minsky’s words inspired Liu. This Thursday, Liu will make her second valedictorian speech to the Montville Township High School (MTHS) Class of 2012. Liu’s first speech was presented four years ago at her eighth grade Lazar Middle School graduation, where she was also the valedictorian. “I was really happy,” the 18-year-old Pine Brook resident said about learning that her third grade dream had been achieved. “In the end, ranking is not that big of a deal. But, I am really honored that I can give a speech and say something to my class.” Liu’s …
