Library to host how-to gardening program.
A task force formed to study class rank and its effect on district students and their college admission process will share its recommendations with the Montville Township Board of Education during Tuesday's meeting. Studying class rank was one of the school district's goals for the school year and the task force was formed to take a closer look at what the district could do to improve the class rank experience for students. Last year, a similar task force was formed for the district to evaluate the effectiveness of its homework procedures. That task force presented its recommendations in a similar meeting fashion and at a later meeting, the board voted to implement several of the changes recommended, including teachers not giving homework …

Montville Township Public Schools spreading cheer through district website.
Montville Township Public Schools has come up with a new way to share good news from around the school district. Previously, the board of education would print the "good news" about students from each of the district schools in school board agendas and Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried would read aloud the news as part of his report during board meetings. At the March 5 meeting, Fried asked what board members thought of the news instead being posted on the district website and not read aloud. According to the first list of good news posted, Woodmont School students raised $2,000 for the Restore the Shore foundation through t-shirt sales, more than 50 Hilldale Elementary School students completed at least six hours of reading for the Six Flags…

Board will meet Tuesday to continue discussing budget proposals, including Lazar School time change.
The Montville Township Public Schools Board of Education will continue public presentations on the proposed 2013-14 budget during Tuesday's meeting. Included in the budget proposal is an idea to change the time of the school day at Lazar Middle School. District administrators have not yet presented a budgetary analysis on how much the change could cost, but Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried presented the initial proposal on Feb. 12 (attached to this article). The board will meet Tuesday at the Montville Township Municipal Building on Changebridge Road at 8 p.m. The board will host additional budget presentations on the following dates:

Tom Mazzaccaro to fill one-year seat left vacant by Jon Alin.
The Montville Township Board of Education chose Tom Mazzaccaro as the newest member of the board during Tuesday night's meeting. Mazzaccaro, Montville Township's Department of Public Works superintendent, will serve a one-year term to fill the seat left vacant by Jon Alin. Alin resigned from the board last year as his family relocated to Florida. The board solicited interested candidates to submit letters of intent to Business Administrator Jim Tevis and the candidates were interviewed publicly during Tuesday's meeting. Because of the timing of Alin's resignation, the new member did not need to be elected by the public, rather appointed by board members. Mazzaccaro was one of three who interviewed for the spot, the other two being former …

Montville Zoning Board of Adjustment will also meet.
The Montville Township Public Schools Board of Education will be meeting Tuesday and could select a new board member to fill the vacant seat of Jon Alin. In January, Business Administrator Jim Tevis collected letters of interest from Montville residents wishing to serve and said that the board would be looking to make a decision on a new member during the first February board meeting. The board will be meeting at 8 p.m. at the Montville Municipal Building on Changebridge Road. The Montville Township Zoning Board of Adjustment will be meeting Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the township municipal building. Montville Girl Scouts from Troop 230 will be …

Superintendent thanks board leaders as state group celebrates School Board Recognition Month.
Whether they do it because they want to see changes in the education system locally or because they want to make sure the school district remains the same, school board members donate hours of their time as a service to their communities. Throughout the state this month, school board members, those volunteers who help make decisions about schools, will be honored by their districts during the New Jersey School Board Association's School Board Recognition Month. "New Jersey's local boards of education play an essential role in our students' lives. They oversee 586 school districts which, in turn, operate nearly 2,500 public schools and provide educational services to nearly 1.4 million children," the NJSBA website said. In the state, there …

From bridges built at Pyramid Mountain to the creation of a searchable grave database for a local cemetery, three Montville Eagles were recognized for their work.
Three teenagers crossed a bridge to manhood recently, and one of them even built a few bridges to get there. Brett Irwin, Brian Smith and Conor Reid all earned their Eagle Scout honors last month and were recognized for their achievments at the Montville Township Board of Education meeting. Board President Dr. Karen Cortellino said she was proud to be in attendance at the ceremony in which the three Montville residents were given their Eagle badges. The three young men would also be given resolutions by the board in their honor that they can show to colleges and universities when applying. "It's really a lifetime commitment that a young boy makes when they go on the trail to Eagle," Cortellino said. Each Scout approached the microphone to…
Board said extraordinary circumstances with the loss of snow days from Superstorm Sandy caused a necessity for flexibility with school calendar.
Montville students will observe Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day in school this year as the Montville Township Board of Education voted 5-2 to approve the calendar change at Tuesday night's meeting. Board members began discussion at last week's reorganization meeting after Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried said he had heard concerns from community members about days being subtracted from the March break in the event of another snow day this year. The district used more than its snow day allowance in the days following Superstorm Sandy. Fried told the board that the district already needed to make up one day to reach the full 180 instructional days required by the state Department of Education. But even so, with the winter nearly half …

Superintendent asks board members to consider restoring school days on upcoming holidays to make up for snow absences.
Superstorm Sandy not only caused Montville residents to lose power. The storm also caused Montville schools to lose snow days. All of them. Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried told Montville Township Board of Education members Monday that the district currently had -1 snow days left after schools were without power and closed for nearly a week following Sandy. Initially, the district had planned to make up any snow days over the four permitted by reducing the number of days students are on spring break, which begins March 25. However, as the district is already without a snow day allowance and it is only the begnning of January, Fried presented another option on Monday: to bring students in for a half day on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) and …

Two re-elected Montville Township Board of Education members were sworn in during the board's reorganization meeting Monday. I'm not sure why it has taken so long to get a class rank expert in/get the task force organized. Cheating has been a problem in the high school for as long as Dr. Fried has been here, and a student-teaching panel made recommendations to improve academic integrity in May of 2011. Modifying the class rank system was one of our many suggestions. I'm glad to see that one suggestion was followed …   more ›
