Sewer Connection Fee Could Be Lowered

Township committee mulls lowering fee, but questions fairness to existing users.

After seeking legal advice on the issue, the Montville Township Committee learned that the township is able to lower the fee it charges new users to connect to the municipal sewer system. The question committee members are now considering is whether lowering the fee would be fair to existing users. There is still information to be gathered on the topic before committee members make a decision to either lower the fee or approve the 2013 fee at the proposed $6,628 for sewer and $3,752 for water connection. Committee members began discussing the issue in 2012 after Committeeman Scott Gallopo said he would like the committee to look into whether the fee was able to be lowered. Who lead the committee to believe that they could not lower connection fees? Is it the same department that told the committee it needed the increase in sewer fees in 2008? If our township committee is not getting accurate information from department heads then they need to ask why?   more ›

Cut Sewer Connection Fee, Committeeman Says

Township officials will examine why higher fee, when compared with other municipalities, has been in place for years.

As the township committee continues to discuss why residents have been paying a higher sewer connection fee than those in neighboring communities for years, one committeeman is asking officials to consider lowering the fee by $1,500. The fee, which was proposed to cost $6,628 under an ordinance discussed at the Dec. 11 meeting, is required of residents to be able to use sewer service in the township. An additional fee is needed for the hook-up itself. "This connection fee is not what we charge to connect you. It is the fee we charge for the privilege to connect," Committeeman Scott Gallopo said. The connection fees in part paid for the expansion of the sewer network so that the connecting homes didn't have to pay for the lines to be run in the street. In comparison my brother in Denville was assessed over $16,000.00 in 1990 just to run the line down his street then charged a hook up fee and the cost of running the line to his home.
