Class Rank Task Force to Host College Admission Expert

Montville residents invited to learn about the history of using class rank and course weighting in the college admission process.

As the Montville Township Public Schools district continues to explore class rank and the effect it has on the college admission process, a field expert has been invited to speak to the Class Rank Task Force and community about the subject. David Tubbs, the district's supervisor of humanities, said Peter Van Buskirk will be giving a presentation on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Montville Township High School cafeteria. "Mr. Van Buskirk is an expert in the area of college admission and has created a presentation to help the Montville community and the task force better understand the history of the use of class rank, the pros and cons of class rank, course weighting, available options to Montville and a perspective through the eyes of an …

Teachers Contract Settled With Montville BOE

Montville teachers will received 2.5 percent increase this year, but agreed on health plan that will significantly save district money.

After more than a year of negotiating, the Montville Township Board of Education voted to ratify a new contract with the Montville Township Education Association (MTEA) Tuesday night. The contract, of which the actual document is still being finalized, is the first in the district's history which combines teachers, custodial and maintenance employees and paraprofessionals. "This result was a long time coming," Board Vice President Dr. Matthew Kayne, who helped lead the negotiations on part of the board, said. The previous contract expired on June 30, 2011. Under the new contract, Kayne said employees agreed to have salaries frozen for the time period covering July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. The employees will, however, see salary …

Student Learning a Priority for Montville Schools This Year

Superintendent presents goals to board of education, including closer look at class rankings and emphasis on mathematics curriculum.

Montville Township Public Schools will place student learning as the highest priority of the year as Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried presented the district's goals to the board of education on Tuesday. The district develops a set of goals annually, breaking each one down for examination and study before implementation of new tactics designed for their achievement. Last year, one of the district goals was to improve homework's effectiveness by examining how it is given to students. Homework was discussed in a townhall-style meeting, a taskforce was developed to form recommendations and students already had a homework-free day this year. Fried said the implementation of the suggestions made by the homework taskforce were "not without a glitch…

Hi Louise, Differentiation should always take place within the classroom. With 20+ students, it is not possible to have each child learning at the same pace, nor do they all learn best with one type of learning style. Differentiation does not mean separating children according to test scores and performance level, it means having the teacher scaffold each lesson so that ALL students can learn the…   more ›

Former Montville BOE Member Receives Service Award

Paul Przetak commended board members for putting in hours of work between meetings.

Paul Przetak was honored with the Montville Township Board of Education Service Award by the board Tuesday for his work as a member from 2008 through 2011. Board President Dr. Karen Cortellino praised Przetak for committing himself to the position during the time that he served and said he did so with no reasons other than wanting to make the school district a better place. "It's a very gratifying job to be a member of the board of education," she said. "You come to the job, to the position, hopefully with no personal agenda. Hopefully the only agenda you have is to ensure the highest quality education that a school district can deliver in a fiscally responsible manner." Cortellino said the first question a board member needs to ask when …

More than 500 Montville children participated this year in the library's summer reading program, totaling about 3,800 hours of voluntary reading, according to Allan Kleiman, director of the Montville Township Public Library.  Sept. 1 marked the beginning of National Library Card Sign-up Month and Kleiman told the Montville Township Board of Education Tuesday night he plans to implement a townwide initiative to ensure that all Montville children have library cards.  “More and more newcomers have come to Montville,” he said. “And one of the first things they do after getting settled in is come to the library.” Kleiman said dozens of new students who had not started school yet came to the library this summer. He said he hopes this initiative …

'Ambitious' Goals Outlined for New School Year

Improving school district culture a top priority of officials.

Montville Township Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried outlined the 10 district-wide goals for the 2012-13 school year during Tuesday night's board of education meeting, with focusing on creating a culture for student achievement at the top of the list.  Fried broke the goals down into four major categories–student learning, communication and community involvement, human resources and business practices.  “The most important category is student learning,” he said. The goals associated with that category included researching areas that affect the culture of the school district, such as homework, drugs, student placement and competition; refocusing attention on the music and world language programs at all grade levels; implementing …

All-American Athlete Transfers After Coach's Dismissal

Grant Sanchez said he would have finished his senior year in Montville if Anthony SanFilippo was still allowed to coach.

With several local, state and national titles under his belt, Montville track athlete Grant Sanchez has paved the way for what he plans to be a sucessful senior year. That success will not be shared with the Montville Township High School community, however, as Sanchez transferred last week to Morris Hills. If former assistant track coach Anthony SanFilippo was asked to return as a coach this year, Sanchez, 16, said he would have stayed in Montville. "I probably would have stayed just for him," Sanchez said. "I feel like he's a really good coach, he's always been there for all of the kids." Sanchez is a four-time USA Track & Field All-American athlete, has been honored as a 2012 Morris County shot put and discus champion and medaled twice …

I think the BOE and the Community is missing the bigger questions. First why would he transfer to the Morris Hills District and Is this common? The answer to the first question is Morris Hills has the best track program in the county and has a long tradition of success and who would not want that? Second many ahtletes in northern jersey move to Rockaway to be a part of the program, enroll in the …   more ›

Irene Still Has Twp. Cleaning Up 1 Year Later

Mayor remembers 'heroes' of storm aftermath as flood mitigation committee works on preventing flooding in the future.

One year after the tropical storm following Hurricane Irene tore through the Northeast, Montville Township officials said progress has been made in ensuring the devastating flooding like some neighborhoods encountered does not happen again. The storm hit Montville on August 27, 2011, but residents began preparing days in advance by stocking up on supplies and planning for power outages. Despite having advance warning of the severity of the storm and Montville officials coming together to strategize, the actual destruction the storm brought in several neighborhoods in the township was worse than many expected. Remembering how bad the damage of the storm was, Montville Township Mayor Tim Braden called the local firefighters "heroes" for the …

High School Concession Stand Move Still an Option

Board members discuss whether repairing stand in its current location would be more beneficial for the district.

The Montville Township Board of Education is still considering a project to move and repair the concession stand on the high school field. But board members agreed not to vote on the project before getting together a full list of projects that can be paid for with money left over from a 2003 referendum. In 2003, Montville voters approved referendums that related to building renovations and athletic facility enhancements. Board President Dr. Karen Cortellino said Tuesday the district has been discussing making improvements to the concession stand now because it "is actually part of the document that the public voted on." Business Administrator Jim Tevis said the district has been working on a five-year facility plan and considering priority…
