Montville Black U14 team the first from town to win annual event.
In the first 13 years of the Michelle Fund Tournament has been held, there has never been a winner from Montville. Until now. The Montville Black team U14 softball team, managed by Montville Mayor Tim Braden, defeated the Livingston Thunder 5-0 Sunday evening at Manchester Park to win the championship. The fund's originators, Leo and Theresa Sullivan, parents of Michelle, watched the game from the stands. There were 60 teams that competed in the three-day tournament. Theresa Sullivan said the event and the fund helps keep their daughter's name alive. Michelle Sullivan died in 1993 when she was struck and killed by a motorcyclist at the age of 12. Township officials, family members and friends gather for dedication of memorial field.
Sometimes a tragedy can bring a community together. While remembering the loss of Montville's own Michelle Sullivan, a 12-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a motorcyclist while walking in 1993, Sullivan's family members and friends celebrated her life during a field dedication at Manchester Park in her honor Thursday. The field was dedicated by the Montville Baseball & Softball Association and The Michelle Fund. The Michelle Fund is an organization dedicated to raising money for athletic organizations in Montville. It was established by Sullivan's parents after her death, as Sullivan was passionate about softball. Manchester Park youth baseball field to be renamed 'Michelle Sullivan Memorial Field at Manchester Park.'
In 1993, 12-year-old Michelle Sullivan was walking with some friends on Manchester Road when she was tragically struck and killed by a motorcyclist. This past September, during the 18th anniversary of her passing, the Montville Township Committee unanimously approved a project to rename the Manchester Park baseball field "The Michelle Sullivan Memorial Field at Manchester Park." Now the project, which has been spearheaded by the Montville Baseball and Softball Association (MBSA), is nearing completion and the field will soon be dedicated in Sullivan's name.
