Maple Ave. Dead End Delayed By Sandy

Construction work pushed back to spring as township seeks lower cost.

Some residents in the Pine Brook neighborhood have been waiting months for a permanent solution for the dead end on Maple Avenue to be agreed on. Now, as prep work was expected to begin, township officials are planning to push back work to the spring. Township Admnistrator Victor Canning said on Nov. 13 that the township should delay the project because of Superstorm Sandy. "My suggestion is it would be something we would address in the springtime at this point," he said. Currently, temporary barriers block off the roadway where residents had complained motorists were speeding through the neighborhood to cut through between Route 80 and Route 46. Last month, the township committee approved a curbed island to permanently block off the …

Maple Ave. Dead End Could Be Approved Tuesday

Township Committee to discuss landscaped island, instead of cul-de-sac, for Pine Brook street.

The issue of cutting off traffic between Route 46 and Interstate 80 on Maple Avenue, in Pine Brook, has not yet reached a dead end. In fact, the solution has not yet been agreed upon by Montville Township Committee members after a new, cheaper option for a landscaped, curbed island was presented to committee members at the Sept. 25 meeting. The committee will revisit the issue during Tuesday night's committee meeting after discussion on the topic was tabled until more residents of the neighborhood had the opportunity to hear the discussion in person and voice their opinions. The latest design plan was presented by Interim Township Engineer Mark Mantyla and the cost of the island is about $9,300. Before consideration of the island, the …

Cul-de-sac May Be Scrapped Over Fear of Legal Issues

Township committee now considering another option for Maple Avenue as officials express concern over potential litigation from property owners.

The issue of constructing a cul-de-sac on Maple Avenue, in Pine Brook, has not reached a dead end, but it has still not been resolved either. Montville Township Committee members were presented with a new design option for blocking the road to thru traffic between Route 46 and Route 80 Tuesday night. The new option includes construction of a curbed, landscaped island on the road, as oppose to the cul-de-sac options that have been discussed at the last few meetings. The cost of the island, including providing full access to the driveway at 34 Maple Ave., is about $9,300, according to Assistant Township Engineer Mark Mantyla. The most recent cul-de-sac option the township committee considered was about $76,067 and the first two cul-de-sac …

Maple Ave. Cul-de-sac Project Moving Forward

Committee still seeking input from two affected property owners.

The Montville Township Committee has chosen a design for construction of a permanent cul-de-sac on Maple Avenue and is planning to move forward with the project as soon as possible. But the township is still working on, as it has been for the past several months, getting input from two property owners whose accessways will be affected by the new construction. The committee was presented with two design plans Tuesday evening: one that included three-point turn legs and another that did not. With the plan that was chosen by the majority of commmittee members, a cul-de-sac without three-point turn legs will be constructed. The alternate accessways for both 10 Maple Avenue and 34 Maple Avenue would be relocated, requiring the approval of the …

Maple Ave. Dead End Discussion to Continue Tuesday

Township committee invited affected residents to participate at meeting.

The Montville Township Committee will be continuing discussion on the construction of a permanent dead end on Maple Avenue, in Pine Brook, Tuesday. Township officials sent a letter on Aug. 20 to residents who live in the area near where the dead end would be constructed, inviting them to attend and participate at the committee's public meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. The committee has been discussing the cul-de-sac since at least March after receiving input from residents who claimed safety was a concern in the area because of motorists traveling through the neighborhood to cut through between Route 80 and Route 46. A traffic study was conducted in the neighborhood and found that cars do often travel at high rates of speed through the streets. …

Maple Ave. Dead End Issue 'Ruining' One Man's Life

Pine Brook resident said temporary barriers negatively impacting neighborhood as Township Committee continues to consider solution.

As the summer is nearing its conclusion, the Montville Township Committee still has not decided on a permanent solution to dead-ending Maple Avenue, in Pine Brook. The township began discussing a dead end on the road after residents approached the committee with concerns about motorists speeding through their neighborhood, which is between Route 80 and Route 46. A traffic study was also conducted in the area and confirmed that cars are often traveling on Maple Avenue at a high rate of speed. Temporary barriers have been in place, blocking the roadway to thru traffic, since July. But one neighborhood resident said the bright orange barriers have affected his quality of life in a negative way and urged the committee Tuesday night to move …

Mrs. Burke- I am not bitter at all. I have friends in your neighborhood and am down there quite often- so I hear much of the controversy regarding the cul-de-sac issue. I am from town and do go to town meetings. I just think that it's sad that everyone can't come to a joint decision- you stated you have wonderful neighbors but it seems that no one is getting along and everyone is against each …   more ›

Committee 'Pushing' for Permanent Dead-End on Maple Ave.

Barricades are in place, but committee continues to seek long-term solution to traffic problem.

Temporary barricades have been in place on Maple Avenue, in Pine Brook, for more than a week now. But the township committee has pledged a promise to work toward a permanent solution to dead-ending the road. "Every single week, we have to keep pushing," Committeeman Scott Gallopo said at the July 10 meeting. Gallopo said he wanted to ensure that the committee continues to move forward on the project and not let it fall by the wayside. The township installed the barriers this month as a solution to a traffic issue residents were experiencing where motorists were traveling at allegedly high speeds to cut through the neighborhood between Route 80 and Route 46. A traffic study was presented to the committee by then-Township Engineer Tony …

Township Approves Making Maple Ave. a Dead-End

Residents spoke in favor and against the ordinance before committee's unanimous approval.

The Montville Township Committee unanimously voted Tuesday night to pass an ordinance that will make Maple Avenue a dead-end street. Temporary barriers will be put into place, approximately 200 feet from the intersection with New Maple Avenue, as of July 2.  Many residents of Maple Avenue and the surrounding area came to the meeting to speak for and against the ordinance. This ordinance was recommended by Township Engineer Anthony Barlie Jr., who presented a traffic study to the township committee in March 2012 . The study pointed out a substantial amount of traffic was passing through the Maple Avenue neighborhood to reach the entrance of Interstate 80 East. Residents who spoke during the public discussion portion of the meeting …

Maple Avenue to be a Dead End

Township committee supports temporary barriers until permanent solution can be reached for traffic issue.

After hearing one neighborhood's concerns for the past several months, the Montville Township Committee agreed that immediate action was better than no action when it comes to a solution for traffic issues on Maple Avenue in Pine Brook, where motorists are, at times, traveling at a high speed to cut through the neighborhood between Route 46 and Interstate 80. The township committee voted unanimously to have a resolution drafted for introduction at the next meeting that would allow for a dead end to be placed on the road and temporary barriers to be used until a permanent cul-de-sac solution is decided on. Barriers could be placed on the roadway by the end of June or beginning of July. Township Engineer Anthony Barile presented two cul-de-…

Residents: Maple Ave. Safety Needs to be Addressed

As committee members seemed split, one asks for more detailed costs for project.

The absence of one Montville Township Committee member from Tuesday's meeting may have delayed a resolution to a traffic issue on Maple Avenue, in Pine Brook, that has some residents concerned about the safety of neighborhood children. The issue has been raised because some residents feel that traffic has reached an unsafe level in the neighborhood, with cars cutting through to get to Interstate 80 at excessive speeds, at times. The township conducted a traffic study on Margaret Street, Maple Avenue and John Street that showed that cars were traveling at excessive speeds in the area during certain times, however, the Montville Township Police Department felt that the results of the study were disingenuous. The police conducted their own …
