Montville teachers will received 2.5 percent increase this year, but agreed on health plan that will significantly save district money.
After more than a year of negotiating, the Montville Township Board of Education voted to ratify a new contract with the Montville Township Education Association (MTEA) Tuesday night. The contract, of which the actual document is still being finalized, is the first in the district's history which combines teachers, custodial and maintenance employees and paraprofessionals. "This result was a long time coming," Board Vice President Dr. Matthew Kayne, who helped lead the negotiations on part of the board, said. The previous contract expired on June 30, 2011. Under the new contract, Kayne said employees agreed to have salaries frozen for the time period covering July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. The employees will, however, see salary …

Salary guides agreed on, contract language under review for faculty and staff.
A union representative for the Montville Township Education Association (MTEA) said she expects a new contract to be ratified with the Montville Township Board of Education by the end of the month. Union members, including teachers, secretaries, custodians and other district employees, have been working under an expired contract for more than a year as negotiations have continued. The board of education and MTEA reached a tentative agreement in August and salary guides were submitted to both parties for review in October. Vickie Walsh, a field representative for the New Jersey Eduction Association, said Friday the salary guides for all employees represented by the union have been agreed on by both parties. Agreement on the salary guides …

Mediator meets with union, board of education Thursday.
More than a hundred Montville Township Education Association (MTEA) members dressed in red lined the property of the board of education office Thursday in a demonstration urging board members to settle their contract. MTEA Officer Anne Simon said the members were at the office, on River Road, to "greet" the state-appointed mediator who was scheduled to meet with board members and union representatives Thursday evening. "What's happening today is we're here to greet the mediator since, unfortunately, we haven't been able to reach an agreement with the board," she said. Simon said the members, who include teachers, secretaries, custodians and more, have been working under an expired contract for one year. "We're hoping that our support and …

Entities waiting on state-appointed mediator.
The Montville Township Board of Education and Montville Township Education Association (MTEA) remain in a holding pattern on contract negotiations more than a month after an impasse was declared. Board President Karen Cortellino said they are now waiting to be assigned a mediator by the state. Cortellino sits on the district negotiating committee with Board Vice President Matthew Kayne, the committee chairman, and board member Jackie Ritschel. The teachers, under MTEA, consolidated in October with custodians, secretaries and paraprofessionals to become one bargaining unit, causing some delays in the discussions. “We met about 10 times starting last May,” Cortellino said. “In October, the teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals and …

State-appointed mediator to help sides settle dispute.
Negotiations between the Montville Board of Education and the Montville Township Education Association (MTEA) are at a standstill, albeit a “respectful” and “professional” one, according to representatives from both sides at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. According to Board Vice President Matthew Kayne, a state-appointed mediator will join the negotiations after the two sides mutually decided to declare an impasse at their last meeting. “We believe that this will permit the board and the MTEA to get to the true issues we must resolve and will allow us to reach a respectfully mutual agreement,” Kayne said. “We want to provide them with competitive salaries, benefits and working agreements. However, the board also recognizes its …

If they froze the entire compensation pool then they had to freeze all the salaries. Teachers do not get automatic advancement on the salary guide the way police and fire do when there is no new contract in place.   more ›
