Connecticut editor ships eight boxes of donated items to be distributed at Senior House.
Nine letters in the alphabet. That is about all that Montville, Conn., and Montville, N.J., have in common, according to Mayor Tim Braden. But on Wednesday, the generosity of strangers was inspirational to the mayor, as he tore open eight boxes of non-perishable food items, toiletries and cleaning supplies collected and donated by the other Montville Patch. "After 10 days of dealing with a catastrophe and tragedy in the town and seeing what our residents have endured, it's heartwarming to receive help from a group of people who the only thing we share with them is a name," Braden said. Montvill Patch (Conn.) Editor Ellyn Santiago asked her readers to bring items for donation to Town Hall on Monday after reading about the New Jersey …

Montville kids will have a chance to treat more than trick this weekend as the township is planning to host a safe trick-or-treating event that will include a donation drive for those who remain without power. The "Scare, Share and Care" event will be held Saturday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Montville Township High School parking lot. For the "scare" part of the event, kids will be able to dress in costume and "trick-or-trunk," or visit parked cars filled with candy, in the parking lot of the high school. The township decided this would be safer than children traveling door-to-door, as many trees and wires remained down from Tropical Storm Sandy. Children will need supervision, however, as the Montville Township Recreation Department has…

Connecticut Patch site collected food items to send to Tropical Storm Sandy victims in New Jersey.
Montville has a friend-well, actually, a few friends-in a city with the same name in another state. The Patch of our "sister city" in Montville, Conn., collected more than six boxes of food that will be packed up and shipped Tuesday to Montville, N.J. Montville Patch (the other Montville Patch) Editor Ellyn Santiago offered to help Montville, N.J., residents who remain without power and food by gathering the donations that will be brought to the Montville Township High School shelter. Santiago asked her readers to drop off non-perishable foods at Town Hall Monday in her Daily Five column: We are collecting non-perishable foods (not canned; plastic and paper-wrapped including dried meats and fruits, juice boxes, granola bars and the like) …

Nearly a week in the dark, many pleased to get a hot meal and shower at Montville Township High School.
Whether they came for a hot plate of ziti or to watch the N.Y. Giants, Montville residents seemed to find comfort at the shelter set up at Montville Township High School Sunday night. The shelter, which welcomed more than 640 people since Friday, had 15 residents sleep overnight on Saturday and several overnight reservations by 6 p.m. Sunday. Nancy Mertz and Chris Ziolowski, two township social services workers with the senior and youth divisions, organized and helped run the shelter through the weekend. "We've had 640 people that have either showered, charged up, gotten something to eat or just warmed up," Mertz said. "That's what we're here for." In addition to Mertz and Ziolowski, the shelter was staffed with Aramark food service …

Three Scouts were honored by the Montville Township Board of Education last week.
Being an Eagle Scout is more than wearing a uniform and camping. As several local Eagle Scouts proved recently, it means making a difference in the community in which you, or others, live to benefit residents. Andrew Kim, Kevin Lindert and Alexander Novis were honored by the Montville Township Board of Education on Oct. 16 for earning their Eagle Scout awards and completing projects around Montville, including renovating school district tennis courts, beautifying the Montville dog park and more. As his Eagle project, Lindert renovated a room at the high school that was previously used for storage, transforming it into a college resource center. He installed new carpeting and desks, with help from 35 fellow scouts, and also painted the …
