Valhalla, Towaco Residents Feel Ignored as Power Restoration Continues

JCP&L told township officials they would be working in the neighborhoods as residents kept fingers crossed.

Like many throughout New Jersey, some Montville residents in sections of Towaco and the Lake Valhalla community remained without power Thursday.  Knowing neighbors throughout the township had already seen their power restored was frustrating, one said. "It's hard to see other people's power coming back on and you've still got nothing," Lauren Trionfo, a Duynecrest Road resident, said. Trionfo has been without power since 2 p.m. on Oct. 29. Her family was recently loaned a generator by a friend whose power was restored, but she said she has only been using it to heat up the house at night so that her family is warm enough to sleep there. She has been cooking meals on the grill, working at her friend's house, doing laundry at her boss' house…

Fire Rips Through Lake Valhalla Home

Cause of fire is still unknown but neighborhood remains without power.

An afternoon fire destroyed much of a Macleay Road home, in the Lake Valhalla section of Montville, Tuesday afternoon. Montville Township police Capt. Ed Rosellini said the cause of the fire is still unknown, but that the neighborhood remained without power since Tropical Storm Sandy made landfall Oct. 29. Rosellini said it is possible that a generator or candle inside the home caused the fire. A few streets away, power trucks with linemen could be seen working on restoring the lines. Officials responded just before 3 p.m. An officer on the scene said no one was home at the time of the incident. Firefighters from the Montville Volunteer Fire Department and Towaco Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene. Patch will have updates on this …

Groups Question Use of Trail for Power Line Work

They wonder if the Morris County Park Commission and utility company, in choosing Valhalla Glen, have settled on the best route.

PSE&G is planning to walk and use "mules," essentially all-terrain golf carts, on a popular Turkey Mountain hiking trail so the utility company can install the controversial Susquehanna-Roseland power line, the executive director of the Morris County Park Commission said at the commission's Monday meeting. The company needs access to the power line that runs over Turkey Mountain so it can install new lines that have twice the height and capacity. Representatives of the Lake Valhalla Club and Valhalla Civic Association who attended the Park Commission meeting, held at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, said they worry about how the traffic will harm the area, and wondered why the Valhalla Glen trail was determined to be the best way to access the…

VIDEO: Lake Valhalla Polar Plunge 2012

Participants jumped into the frigid lake Sunday to start the new year.

Residents packed the Lake Valhalla Club beach around noon on Sunday for the fifth annual Lake Valhalla Polar Plunge. Plungers took turns leaping from a dock into the cold water. The Montville Fire Department and First Aid Squad were on hand keep an eye on participants as they plunged into the lake, which was about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, organizers said. The air temperature was around 50 degrees. The polar plunge tradition started with a handful of friends and has since grown, organizer Michael Metz said. Organizers hope the tradition continues to grow and can be used to support organizations. This year, the fire department made a donation to support to Adrian Simone. The master of ceremonies—a sportscaster character named Charlie …

JCP&L Tree Trimming to Include Roads Near Rt. 46

Residents welcome the work, which the power company says was delayed by Hurricane Irene and the October snowstorm.

Tree, shrub and brush trimming that Jersey Central Power & Light is planning to do in the Lake Valhalla section on Montville Township also will also be done on streets around Route 46, according to an update on the township website. Ron Morano, a JCP&L spokesman, said the power company is catching up on regular trimming along its distribution circuits. Some of the work was put on hold because of Hurricane Irene and the October snowstorm, he said. "The vegetation management program controls trees, shrubs and brush growth around our facilities and equipment—including power lines—and is performed every four years," he said. Montville residents in the affected areas welcomed the news. Donna Abbott said Waughaw Road from Indian Lane to …

JCP&L to Trim Trees Around Lake Valhalla

The work is expected to start around Dec. 12 and last two weeks.

Jersey Central Power & Light will be trimming trees around power lines in the Lake Valhalla section of the township, according to a notice on the town's website. Work will begin on or about Dec. 12 and last approximately two weeks. We're checking with JCP&L to see if we can find out more about what to expect and how the area was identified as needing attention. In the meantime, here's a map from the town's website on where crews will be working.

I agree, my dad lives on Stoneybrook near Waughaw and his power is out everytime there is a storm because of a downed tree on Waughaw. Does anyone know what is going to happen to all the branches that are down on the ground, near the streets? Is the town going to pick them up?   more ›
