Montville Lawyer Pleads Guilty to Structuring Cash, Failing to Report to IRS

Goldie Sommer structured $354,000 in client funds through attorney accounts to avoid reporting money to IRS, attorney says.

An attorney from Montville and her partner pleaded guilty Thursday to structuring client funds through attorney accounts to avoid obligatory reporting to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Approximately $354,000 was structured, according to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman. Goldie Sommer, 61, and her legal partner, Edward Englehart, 61, of Rockaway, both attorneys of the Fairfield firm of Sommer and Englehart, could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine each. They pleaded guilty in Newark federal court Thursday after surrendering to IRS agents in Newark on November 16, 2011. Towaco Man Gets 54 Months for Embezzlement

U.S. Attorney said Newmark embezzled more than $10.4 million from employer.

A 39-year-old Towaco man was sentenced to 54 months in prison Wednesday for embezzling more than $10.4 million from his employer, Columbus Hill Capital Management LP, between February 2008 and March 2011. A joint FBI and IRS criminal investigation led to the initial charges. David Newmark, who worked as the chief financial officer for the Short Hills-based firm, had pled guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of tax evasion before U.S. District Judge William H. Walls, according to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. Newmark was sentenced in Newark Federal Court to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $10,442,379 in restitution in addition to his prison sentence. United Way Offering Free Tax Prep Services

United Way of Northern New Jersey is partnering with the IRS, AARP and other community organizations to provide low-income residents with free tax preparation from IRS-certified volunteers. These free tax sites will be open in Morris, North Essex, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties from Feb. 1 through April 15. Morris County residents can start making appointments now by dialing 2-1-1 to be connected to a location near you. A pair of attorneys with a Fairfield law firm allegedly deposited $354,000 in a way to avoid currency reporting requirements by keeping the deposits under $10,000, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Goldie Sommer, 61, of Montville and Edward Engelhart, 61, of Rockaway allegedly made numerous deposits between Aug. 13 and Sept. 22, 2010, in large, even dollar amounts—but none greater than the $10,000 threshold that triggers currency transaction reports to the IRS so the government is aware when large amounts of U.S. currency are moved, authorities said.
