This summer could be remembered as a traffic hell by the millions of people who travel east over the George Washington Bridge thanks to the closure of a lane on the oft-congested Cross Bronx Expressway from this Friday through Labor Day. The lane closure will take place on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx. The bridge is already a chokepoint, as traffic from both levels of the GWB merge onto one roadway. NJDOT officials have announced the replacement of the Interstate 280 bridge decks in both directions over the Whippany River connecting Parsippany-Troy Hills and East Hanover in Morris County. “The replacement of these structurally deficient Interstate 280 bridge decks exemplifies NJDOT’s commitment to state-of-good repair investments that improve safety and help New Jersey compete for jobs,” said Commissioner Jim Simpson. The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Thursday that Interstate 80 westbound Exit 47 off-ramp to Route 46 westbound, as well as the Route 46 westbound shoulder in Parsippany, will be closed Friday night for milling and paving work. According to a release by NJDOT, variable message signs will direct motorists destined for Route 46 westbound to use Exit 48 for Hook Mountain Road south to Route 46 westbound in Montville. The release stated that all work is weather dependent. County paving project set to begin this week.
Update: According to a representative from the Morris county engineering office, work has begun on Route 202 in Montville, though actual milling and paving is not set to being until Tuesday, August 3. The project is scheduled for three days of work from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and one evening of night paving to run from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The project should be completed by August 6.
