Willowbrook Mall was bustling with activity at 5 a.m. Black Friday. The mall was supposed to open at 6 a.m., but several security personnel said the mall opened at 3 a.m.; Gap and Macy’s opened at midnight. Toys "R" Us on Hamburg Turnpike opened Thanksgiving night at 9 p.m. Dozens of people lined up to purchase discounted technology like netbooks and video games. The massive rush generally associated with Black Friday was somewhat calm this year at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall Friday morning. There was ample parking outside and the mall wasn't overly crowded. The line outside Route 10 store began to form six hours before the doors opened Thursday.
Several hundred packed Target as the Black Friday rush began at the Route 10 store in East Hanover Thursday at midnight. The line began at about 6 p.m., and stretched through the parking lot by the time the doors finally opened. Once inside, shoppers crammed the aisles in search of the best bargains.
