The commendation is named in honor of the late 26th District Assemblyman Alex DeCroce.
Gov. Chris Christie presented the first Alex DeCroce Leadership Award to former Morris County Freeholder John Murphy Wednesday afternoon in Whippany. The presentation was made before the Morris County Chamber of Commerce at Birchwood Manor in Whippany. Murphy is the first recipient of the award created to honor veteran 26th District Assemblyman and Republican Minority Leader Alex DeCroce, who died suddenly in January. DeCroce, a Parsippany resident, was succeeded by his widow, current Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce. Ironically, Murphy is an old political rival of the governor's. In 1997, then-Freeholder Christie was challenged for his seat by Murphy, who pulled off the upset. Christie ended up filing a defamation of character lawsuit …

GOP Committee picked minority leader's widow over Montville attorney Larry Casha, 120-67.
Parsippany's Betty DeCroce is the Republican party's choice to represent Montville and other District 26 towns in the state General Assembly. At a special GOP convention to select a successor for the late Assemblyman Alex DeCroce at the Zeris Inn in Mountain Lakes Wednesday night, his widow defeated her lone challenger, Montville attorney and GOP committeeman Larry Casha, 120-67. Two other candidates who expressed interest in the seat—Rockaway Township Mayor Larry Sceusi and former gubernatorial candidate Gary Steele, an attorney who has a law office in Montville—dropped out early. That left Casha and DeCroce. "I think we saw, with the energy in the room, that everyone believed that Betty Lou, with her impeccable qualifications was the …

26th District legislator says transitioning after the loss of DeCroce is 'difficult and unpleasant.'
The Morris County Republican Committee meets Wednesday for a special convention to fill the seat left vacant by the sudden Jan. 9 death of 26th District Assemblyman Alex DeCroce, of Parsippany. One of the GOP leaders awaiting the event being held at the Zeris Inn in Mountain Lakes is the late lawmaker's colleague, district office mate and friend—a man in mourning yet moving forward—Assemblyman Jay Webber. In addition to dealing with the personal loss of DeCroce, Webber also faces a move to new district offices. Because of redistricting, Whippany is no longer part of the 26th District, which means the DeCroce/Webber suite of offices on Route 10 will have to move. He said Parsippany sites are among those being considered. Right now, Webber…

If his widow seeks his seat, will any other Republicans challenge her?
Morris County lost a powerful ally last Monday when Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce died suddenly at the end of the long last day of the lame duck session.
