Gov. Christie appeared at Seaside Heights boardwalk Friday to promote the Jersey Shore.
The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey. Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon—a Guinness World Record at over five miles long—to officially declare the shore open. "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. "I'm so thrilled that this morning we're here with the whole country welcoming the Jersey Shore back." After being battered by Superstorm Sandy, many businesses on the boardwalk are open and welcoming customers, though others continue to make repairs. Despite some grey skies, …

Local post will honor war dead on holiday's original date 'rather than the barbecue weekend.'
Montville VFW Post 5481 won't be holding its Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, the day of the federal holiday. Instead, it will begin its memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at the post on Changebridge Road. For years, the post has honored America's war dead on May 30, the original date set for the holiday. Congress passed a law in 1968 moving several holidays, including Memorial Day, to Mondays, creating three-day weekends. The holiday is "supposed to be the 30th," Post Commander Frank Warholic said in a recent interview. Holding it May 30 "rather than the barbecue weekend" is a way to give the holiday the respect it deserves, he said. The post's ceremony includes prayers, the playing of the national anthem, "Taps" and "God Bless America…

Amen to that. The only holiday that stayed true to its date is Independence Day (July 4th). We sort of lose sense of what these wonderful holidays meant to us. For instance, Lincoln's Birthday is supposed to be February 12th and Washington's Birthday s supposed to be February 22nd. Now they are all clumped together for Presidents' Day - whenever that turns out to be. Three-day weekends turn out …   more ›
Less veterans have pending claims but face a longer wait time for VA benefits.
Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home—long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq, causing a large uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. In New Jersey, 3,527 veterans have pending claims in the Newark headquarters, which is less than in recent years according to CIR. However, New Jersey veterans are waiting an average of 256 days as their claims remain pending. That wait time is not far from a recent peak of 258.9 days in 2012. According to the data, the Newark office received an average of 431 claims per month in 2012, down from over 1,000 claims in 2010. The data found that in most regional VA …
