Parsippany Christian Blanks Trinity Soccer

4-0 shutout loss drops boys varsity team to 1-3 on the season.

Say this for the members of the Trinity Christian boys varsity soccer team: they don't give up.

Despite being down by four goals near the end of the second half to Parsippany Christian on Tuesday, the boys were still attacking the goal and calling out to each other for passes and shots in the 4-0 defeat.

"They didn't give up, even though they were down 4-0," assistant coach Peter Smith said. "They play played with some intensity, you got to give them that."

Attitude alone was not enough for the Montville team, as it ended up dropping to 1-3 on the season.

Despite the score, Trinity remained competitive throughout the game. Much of the second half was spent on offense, though the team couldn't find a way to score. Smith chalked it up to discipline.

"The guys were playing a little sloppy," he said. "We weren't running through the balls and connection on passes."

The second half saw several Trinity breakaways, especially from freshman Josiah Hanko and junior Paul Sullivan. Smith said that he would focus on a more team-oriented style of play in the team's subsequent practices.

"We had a lot of guys trying to take on the world," he said. "We're going to work on our give-and-goes and passing it off to other players."

With only four games left in its season, Trinity needs to string some wins together if it hopes to qualify for the postseason, Smith said.

"We've got four more games and we need to win two or three in order to have a solid chance at the semifinals," he said. "Thursday we have a game against a team we beat earlier 6-0 (Kearny Christian). We've got a couple of injured players who are recovering now, so hopefully we'll get them back in time for the semifinals."

Trinity's next home game is against Veritas Christian at Camp Dawson on Oct. 12.
