Scarletknights.com: MHS Grad Named to Big East Weekly Honor Roll

Closing pitcher Jerry Elsing of Montville was given the honor after saving a few games last weekend.

2009 graduate Jerry Elsing, a Rutgers sophomore and closing pitcher for the Scarlet Knights, was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll after two saves against West Virginia last weekend, according to Scarletknights.com.

The high school's athletic director, Paul Pignatello, coached Elsing during his junior and senior years.

"Jerry can throw the ball with a lot of velocity, probably in high school reaching the low 90s," Pignatello said.

Elsing was no stranger to the closer role even while in high school—he was closing for the Mustangs as early as his sophomore year, helping to lead them to a state sectional North 1 Group III championship.

"He threw basically every tournament game for us that year," said Pignatello. "I know he's acting in the closer role at Rutgers, which is really a good role for him, because he comes in and throws hard; he throws gas."

Pignatello said that by Elsing's junior year he was Montville's "best pitcher." That year the team made it back to the sectional finals, but did not win.

"If he hits his spots, he's very effective," said Pignatello. "I'm sure he's gonna be a big part of their [Rutgers'] success in years ahead."
