Roller Rink Options to be Discussed Tuesday

Montville Hockey Association has wanted a rink for years.

The Montville Township Recreation Commission and Township Committee are scheduled to hold a joint meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the municipal building to discuss the possibility of installing a roller hockey rink somewhere in the township.

The regular Committee meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. The meetings are open to the public.

The Montville Hockey Association raised money and acquired a rink several years ago, which association officials said the township suggested they do at the time to show they were willing to contribute toward the rink.

But the rink pieces are in storage, and they don't yet have a place to put it.

Recreation Commissioner Gerry Logan and hockey supporters made their case for installing one at the most recent Township Committee meeting, saying not having a rink in town will hold back the hockey program and adding one will benefit the children in town.

A discussion at an earlier meeting about building a rink over the Community Gardens at Community Park and moving the gardens elsewhere sparked an outcry from gardeners.

The rink discussion comes as the township is weighing possible uses for the Metro and Vreeland properties, which were acquired as open space. Some officials also have wondered if arranging a shared service agreement to use a roller hockey rink in a neighboring town might be the way to go.

"I'd like to see it get done," Committeeman Jim Sandham, the liaison to the Recreation Commission, said of adding a rink. He said he's not set on any particular way of making it happen.
