Leah Wis and Cassandra Harasts were selected to be athletes of the year by USA Track and Field for 2012.

Wis won Youth Division Athlete of the Year for body of work. She was first in New Jersey in each of the following: High Jump (state record), Triple Jump, Discus, and Javelin. Then a few weeks later at the University of Delaware at the regional championship, Wis finished first in Discus, second in Triple Jump, third in the High Jump and fifth in the Javelin. Wis competed in the nationals at the end of July in Baltimore, MD. She finished fourth in the Discus (was leading after preliminaries), sixth in Triple Jump, ninth in High Jump and 17th in Javelin.

Harasts was distance athlete of the year in the intermediate division which consists of mostly sophomores going into their junior year in high school. She was the youngest competitor in New Jersey through to the nationals. She finished first in the 1500m, 3000m and third in the 800m. She only competed in the 1500m, and the 3000m at the regional meet in Delaware. She placed 5th in the 3000m and 3rd in 1500m with temperatures over 100 degrees. The nationals was another meet with temperatures reaching close to 100 degrees. Harasts was 49th in the 1500m and 16th in the 3000m run.

Both Wis and Harasts are freshmen at Montville Township High School. Wis has been playing basketball in the winter and may be joining the track team in the spring. Harasts led the cross country team in the fall and in the winter is a member of the indoor track team.

Congratulations! What a tribute to the town Recreation Track Program headed up by Coach Anthony San Filippo these last few years. We are fortunate that Anthony took over the town program a few years back after we thought it might end. These freshman were well prepared for competing at the high school level. I understand that, as Coach Anthony continues the Recreation Track Program, he has also started a private track club (www.ThrowerNationNJ.com). My child is looking forward to another successful recreation track season! Thanks for being such an awesome coach! Signed - a grateful track Mom

...OMGsh -- let me not forget Coach Kristen who assists Coach Anthony with Rec Track with the sprinters and long jumpers. They are a great team!

I don't want to take away anything from Coach Anthony or Coach Kristen, however, Leah was also coached by her father. Cassandra belonged to the MTC Rebels' team and was coached by Coach Angelo and Coach Greyson.

Congratulations Cassandra! All your hard work and years of training with Coach Angelo and the MTC Rebels has paid off! You are an inspiration to all the Rebels.
