Watching a Wave of Fitness

Exercise US, in its third year, was started by Valley View physical education teacher Len Saunders.

fifth-graders exercised from 8 to 8:15 a.m.

As they finished their jumping jacks, stretches and calisthenics, students at another school started their own 15-minute exercise session.

Schools from across the country signed up for slots to keep a 10-hour, nonstop wave of  exercise going across the country.

The annual Exercise US relay, in its third year, is conducted the first Thursday of October. It is the creation of Len Saunders, a Valley View physical education teacher and the author of "Keeping Kids Fit." He also started Project ACES, for All Children Exercise Simultaneously, which takes place the first Wednesday of May.

"It will keep going now like a ripple effect through the whole entire day," Saunders said Thursday.
