Valley View Students Get Fit in National Program

The program was started by Valley View's own PE teacher.

With childhood obesity on the rise in the U.S., it's become a concern for parents and schools. Last Thursday, Valley View students joined a nationwide effort that is intended to "motivate children to become physically fit and healthy by making fitness fun," according to Exercise US.

Valley View fifth graders took part in Exercise US—which was started by Valley View's PE teacher Len Saunders—and Montville students joined children in the United States to exercise for 10 continuous hours on this special day, according to the Montville school district.

Valley View students kicked off the event and exercised from 8 - 8:15 a.m. and then at 8:15 a.m., another school somewhere else in the nation started their exercise portion of the event. This pattern continued for 10 straight hours, concluding with schools in Hawaii, Alaska, and California, said the district.

"(Len) Saunders, our PE teacher was very proud of all the students who participated," said the district.

Oct. 2 marked the official date of the sixth annual Exercise US program. For more information, go to the Exercise US website.
