Summer Academy Kicks Off

Classes offered to fifth- through eighth-grade students.

The Montville Township parks and recreation department's summer academy is gearing up for a summer of learning with weekly math, reading and writing classes starting July 16.

Students entering the fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth grades have the opportunity to reinforce their learning skills before the start of the upcoming school years. Classes run one week, from Monday through Friday for one hour each day and are taught by Robert R. Lazar Middle School math teacher Tom Vila, social studies teacher Michele Vogel and literature teacher Kathleen Ferraro.

Classes will be held at the Lazar Middle School Library over July 12-16, 19-23, 26-30 and August 2-6. Each class is held for one hour every day for a week during three different hourly slots between 9 a.m. and noon. The class material is not repeated in different sessions, so students can take the same classes over multiple sessions.

The summer academy offers three courses: Mathology, which reinforces basic math skills through pre-algebra; Critical Reading and Study Skills, which will help teach a student how to become a more active and productive learner by increasing reading comprehension and enforcing study skills; and Writing and Reading Literacy, which will help students better understand and respond to different literary genre, vocabulary and writing styles.

Parents pay $75 per one week session and $60 for any additional classes or sessions. Students can be registered in person at the Recreation Department on 195 Change Bridge Road, or online by visiting the municipal services link at www.montvillenj.org, clicking on Parks & Recreation and selecting On-Line Registration.  Interested parents can contact the recreation department at 973-331-3305 for more information.
