Discover MTHS to be 'More Popular' Next Year, Superintendent Says

One board member suggested hosting the high school open house on a homework-free night in the future.

At the end of October, the high school hosted an open house called ‘Discover MTHS’

“It was the first time that the high school in connection with Lazar Middle School planned an event in the fall to bring forward all the wonderful opportunities that our high school has to offer,” said Fried.

High School Principal Douglas Sanford started the open house with some remarks and then parents and students were able to roam the school and stop by a variety of exhibitions.

“I was very pleased that many of the high school teachers were in attendance that evening and many had set up in their classrooms … fascinating displays and hands-on opportunities for students to see what takes place in a high school classroom.

Fried said some of the teacher activities included looking at owl pellets and extracting DNA from strawberries. The marching band and choir performed as well.

“I think that next year it’ll be even more popular now that word has gotten out,” said Fried.

“Parents were impressed by the presentation,” said Board Member Charles Grau. “They were impressed with the preparation and some of them were considering for applying for private schools but two of them said that they” changed their minds.

Grau added that a parent mentioned their kids would have liked to have come, but had homework to do.
