Voters have until 9 p.m. Tuesday to decide whether the school board may spend a surplus on an artificial turf field.

Residents started voting at 2 p.m. Tuesday to decide whether the Board of Education may spend up to $990,000 in surplus funds to install an artificial turf field at . ()

In the Pio Costa Auditorium at the , voters started signing up promptly at 2 p.m. and there was a steady flow of voters coming in.

"We just started and it's busy," poll worker Sally Regan said. "I think people are interested."

Residents had differing opinions.

Sal DeVito, who lives next to football field, said he voted "No" because he is afraid a new drainage system would cause more water to affect his property and that the new field would lead to more noisy games. He said there are plenty of turf fields in town and that he and his children always played on dirt and grass.

Dr. David M. Solomon said his initial perception of the plan was negative, but as he read information on the Montville school district website about why administrators and elected officials want to install an artificial turf field, he came to support the project and encouraged others to do the same.

Dianna Paradise said supporters did a good job of getting out information about the plan, which led her to vote "Yes."
