BOE President Reacts to Abbott District Ruling

Cortellino not surprised, but concerned about how it might affect Montville.

The state Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the state to provide half a million dollars more in funding to Abbott districts, the result of a lawsuit filed by the Education Law Center, based in Newark.

"I am not surprised by the ruling, nor am I surprised that full funding was restored for the Abbott districts," Montville Township Board of Education President Dr. Karen Cortellino wrote in an email to Patch on Wednesday.

Although the ruling does not directly affect Montville's district, the decision could indirectly cost the township's school district.

"I am concerned that if the source of this funding turns out to be a reallocation of this year's state aid awards to the non Abbotts that Montville could be in jeopardy of losing the $600,000 we received for the 2011-2012 school year," Cortellino wrote.

Gov. Chris Christie said on Tuesday that the legislature will have to figure out how the $500 million will be found.
