Transfer of $1.4M Approved by Library Board

The transfer of surplus library funds will now be sent to the state librarian for approval.

The Montville Township Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a transfer of excess funds in the amount of $1,440,313 from the library to the township. This transfer comes one year after of nearly $250,000.

"The entire library board and Allan [Kleiman, the library director] made extra efforts to get this done," library board president Howard Chesler said.

The surplus equates to of the entire adopted 2011 municipal budget, but still is pending approval by the state librarian.

Kleiman said that the state librarian will look to see whether the Montville Township Library is keeping up with current library trends, whether there are enough funds left to maintain services and staff, and whether there are sufficient funds to .

Kleiman, who said Montville's library is the best in the county, was confident that the state librarian would find that the  is keeping up with and even staying ahead of current trends, and that there are plenty of funds for staff, services, and the future.

"We haven't cut anything," Kleiman said. "The surplus is from running the library efficiently...we are busy from the time we open to the time we close."

Library board member Don Kostka agreed, saying that the library surplus is due to efficiency, not to cuts in services.

"We just looked at things really closely, and said no to things that didn't make sense," Kostka said.
