Town Posts Tree, Brush Removal Guidelines

What the town's hauler will pick up, and where you're on your own.

The October snow storm left "tree carnage that looked like 'War of the Worlds' meets the Brazilian rain forest," Star-Ledger columnist Mark Di Ionno suggested last week.

The description seems apt for Montville and the township has been hearing from residents who are wondering what exactly they're supposed to do with all of the "tree carnage."

To help residents figure that out, the town posted a guide on its website Monday.

From the township website:

  • The Township will remove trees and tree parts that have fallen from Township property, or the Township Right-of-Way, through the Department of Public Works or the additional contractors that have been hired to supplement the DPW.
  • Trees that have fallen on private property that meet the criteria enumerated below will be collected through curbside collection by the Township’s Solid Waste and Recycling Hauler.
  • Trees that exceed the capacity of the curbside collection program are the property owner’s responsibility to recycle.

Curbside Collection of Tree Parts and Brush

Brush can be bundled for collection with the maximum bundle size being 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length and weighing no more than 50 lbs.  Brush must be prepared so that each bundle can be handled by one person and branches must not exceed 4 inches in diameter.  You may also place this material in a rigid container.  Collection of brush and tree parts takes place on the first garbage collection day of the week, i.e. either Monday or Tuesday; however, this material must remain separate from your regular, household garbage.

Tree Parts & Brush Not Collected Through the Curbside Collection Program

If you have branches or tree parts that are in excess of 4 inches in diameter, you may take them to a composting facility or arrange through a private contractor to have it removed.  For a list of composting facilities, please see the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority’s website page on Brush/Tree parts.
