Public Works to Repair Montville Sewer Line

The project is set to begin in early September.

The Montville Township Public Works Department plans to begin what director Tom Mazzaccaro has characterized as "preventative maintenance" on Montville's main trunk sewer line sometime in early September.

According to a release on the township website, the project will involve relining over 10,000 feet of pipe with fiberglass and carbon-fiber lining.

"The line is in pretty bad shape," Mazzaccaro said. "This sewer line carries a couple millions of raw sewage a day. It's not really the kind of thing you want to let get bad."

According to Mazzaccaro, the line, which has been in service since 1966, is deteriorating inside due to age. The public works department did an inspection to research the level of erosion and came to the conclusion that the line would either have to be replaces or repaired.

"Replacing the line would cost millions and millions of dollars," he said. "It would cause tremendous destruction. It would be a major disruption. If we don't do it, somewhere down the road it would be a major project."

Mazzaccaro says the project, which, according to the township website, will involve work on Changebridge Road, Stiles Lane and Route 46 in the township, will not be overly disruptive to commuters and area residents, nor will it affect township sewer service.

"There is no digging involved," he said. "The only thing is that workers will go through manholes to do the job, and police will be present wherever they need to go. There will be no disruption in service. I doubt it will be a problem."

According to the township's release, the lining is installed using a method called "cured-in-place," meaning a flexible lining is placed in the existing sewer to reinforce the pipe.

Mazzaccaro said the project is being funded by a loan from the DEP and that no interest would be incurred for 75 percent of the cost.

According to the township website, the project is expected to begin around Sept. 1 and scheduled to last until November.
