Committee Approves $20K Community Park Project

Improvements to the parking lot lights in the park hoped to be completed by this fall.

The township committee voted to adopt an ordinance that will result in the replacements of the parking lot lights at the Community Park at its meeting on Tuesday.

According to the ordinance, the project is projected to cost $20,000, which will be appropriated from the Township Capital Improvement Fund.

Deputy Mayor Tim Braden said that the lights at the park have become a safety issue and that they need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

"We've lost a couple of lights that have fallen," he said. "They've rotted off and come down, so it's a concern."

According to Braden, the project will involve salvaging the existing light poles instead of outright replacing them. He said that upgrading the pole instead of replacing them  would result in savings to the township.

"The poles go down about four feet below grade, and they are rotting," he said. "We're going to cut the poles off at the grade and repair them."

Braden said that the township plans to use a fabrication similar to the ones at Community Park playground.

According to township engineer Anthony Barile, the project's timetable is going to be dependant on the Public Works Department's ability to create a fabrication and physically replace the lights.

"It's going to depend on what is needed to get the job done," he said.

Braden said that he hopes the project will be completed sometime this fall, though it would depend on the fabrication and specifications of the project. He said that the lights would be replaced one at a time as the PWD is able to address the situation.

According to the ordinance, because the project falls under the umbrella of general improvements to the township, the cost of the replacement will not be assessed.

The issue of repairing the lights in the Community Park parking lot was first presented at the Sept. 14 township committee meeting. The ordinance was introduced at the Sept. 28 meeting.

The next township committee meeting is scheduled for Oct. 26.
