9th Annual Arbor Day Event Friday

is proud to announce its ninth annual Arbor Day Celebration and Tree City USA Designation.

The theme of the 2012 Arbor Day Poster Contest is: “Save & Plant Trees in Montville! To Save Water Flora and Fauna.” 

The event will be held on Arbor Day, Friday at 8:30 a.m. at Montville Town Hall, 195 Changebridge Rd. Montville, NJ 07054.

Free refreshments and snacks will be provided by the Montville Township Women’s Club.

This year Montville Township will be honoring Hugh Merritt. Merritt is a long time resident of Towaco. His volunteering at Montville, The Great Swamp Outdoor Education, Chatham, The Audubon Society and educational programs at has brought hundreds of people a little closer and more knowlegeable about the nature around them. 

Merritt is a Certified Master Gardener through Morris County Rutgers Extention Service. He is involved in educational outreach programs for special children at Park Lake School in Rockaway, schools in Verona and day care facilities in Montville. 

Merritt was a seven-year member of the Montville Environmental Commission. He is currently completeing his internship at Rutgers Environmental Stewardship Program. His dedication to community environmental outreach is celebrated by all residents who have had the opportunity to learn from this wonderful gentleman.

The Grand Prize winner of this year is fourth grade student Nicholas Leblanc from  

and Cedar Hill Elementary Schools had six winners. All the students will be at the Arbor Day Celebration and partipate in the planting of the ceremonial tree.

The large flowering tree has been generously donated by Cording Landscape Design on Main Road in Towaco. Ron Cording, owner, will be on hand to give tree planting tips and to answer questions regarding care of trees.  

The Arbor Day Celebration is an educational, enjoyable and exciting way to end Earth Week. Arbor Day is celebrated all over the United States each year on the last Friday in April.

The event is sponsored by the Montville Township Environmental Commission and the Montville Township Women’s Club.
