Water Main Pipe Replaced, Water Usage Returns to Normal

Water was turned off in certain areas of the township and police warned some may see discoloration while repairs were made.

A water main broke in Montville Monday morning causing some residents to lose service or see discoloration, according to Montville Police Capt. Rudy Appelmann.

By 4 p.m. Monday, the broken pipe was removed and a new one was being installed. Police expected water usage would be back to normal by 6 p.m. Monday.

A 12-inch water main broke at the intersection of East Cheryl Road and Orchard Drive at about 6 a.m. Monday. The water was turned off in certain intersections to isolate the break for repairs, Appelmann said.

Because this was such a large pipe that burst, "many homes throughout the Township" may see dirty water.

"If you experience dirty water, open the cold water faucets on the lowest floor in the house and let the water run until it clears. This may take 15 - 30 minutes," according to Appelmann's alert at 10:22 a.m. on Monday. Dirty or cloudy water is still potable but not desirable for use.

If it persists call the Water & Sewer Department office during normal business hours 973-331-3330.
