Trick-or-Treaters at the Ready

Montville police offer safety tips.

Halloween was Monday, but children might be coming to your door on Saturday looking for something good to eat.

The town after a freak October snow storm caused widespread power outages and road closures. Students said "Boo" to the news, but were relieved they still would get a chance to go.

John Acker, a fifth-grader, said he tried trick-or-treating at the Willowbrook Mall on Monday, but without much luck.

"I was kind of happy because they didn't cancel it," he said this week. "I'm looking forward to getting a lot more candy."

  • Go with parents. Never go into a stranger's house, or even ring their doorbell, unless an adult is with you.
  • Look both ways and take hands when crossing the street.
  • Have parents inspect candy before you eat it.
  • Bring a flashlight and go with a group.
  • For older trick-or-treaters, if your parents set a curfew, meet it.  It's a good way to build trust.
