Route 159 Bridge Repairs Soon Underway

Road not expected to be closed during construction work.

Montville's Route 159 bridge deck, which borders the Township of Fairfield over the Passaic River, is slated for repairs, according to Montville Township Administrator Victor Canning.

"Luckily for us, as a township, state police will handle all of the traffic," Canning told Montville Township Committee members at the April 2 meeting.

The bridge deck is located near the Pio Costa development and the Home Depot, Canning explained. It is about a half-mile west of Route 46, according to a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

"They will be doing the whole westbound section. If they need to do more, they will," he said.

In 2009, the state Department of Transportation announced $2 million in repairs to the Route 159 overpass over Route 46 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The new bridge deck project will be federally-funded.

"Replacing this Route 159 bridge deck reflects the State of New Jersey’s commitment to improving our infrastructure and stimulating the economy,” then-Governor Jon Corzine said in 2009.

Canning did not share a specific timeline of when the project is expected to begin, but said the repairs have been approved. He also said the road will not be shut down completely as work progresses on the road that connects Essex and Morris counties.
