Montville to Receive Grant for Route 46 Safety

Grant funding awarded by NJDOT to several municipalities to aid with high crash areas on highways.

will be receiving an $11,669.49 grant from the state to help make the portion of Route 46 that runs through the township safer.

According to an announcement by Gov. Chris Christie's administration Wednesday, Montville is one of 53 municipalities that will share in $2 million this year through the Safe Corridor program by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Division of Local Aid and Economic Development.

“Safety is the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s top priority, and these grants support safety through local enforcement and capital improvement projects,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said.  “The funding helps local governments achieve their objectives without burdening local property taxpayers.”

The Safe Corridor grant program began in 2003 and is intended to address safety issues on portions of several New Jersey highways with high crash rates. Funding for the grant program is generated by fines collected for moving violations on designated Safe Corridors. Funds are allocated through the program based on crash data, with more money being allocated to municipalities with more crashes.

Also nearby on Route 46, Parsippany-Troy Hills is expected to receive $2,070.39 and Fairfield is expected to receive $23,903.63,

Grant money is used by municipalities to purchase safety and law enforcement equipment, such as radars, police vehicles, computer software and help pay for salaries.
