Montville High Grad, Harvard Student Dies After Falling From Off-Campus Building

Andrew Sun died less than 24 hours after the fall from injuries incurred.

Andrew Sun, a 2012 Montville High School graduate, was pronounced dead around 4 a.m. Monday morning at a Massachusetts hospital some 24-hours after falling from a building early Sunday morning.

A resident of the Pforzheimer House at Harvard University, Sun was scheduled to graduate in 2016, according to the school’s student newspaper, The Crimson. The Star-Ledger first reported Sun was a Montville resident.

Montville High Principal Douglas Sanford released a statement Monday night, calling Sun a "dedicated member of the MTHS community." Sun was the president of the math club and was a member of the Environmental, Robotics and Key clubs. He also helped organize paper recycling programs and raised funds for children's hospitals and UNICEF, the principal said.

"On behalf of Montville Township High School, and all of the Montville Township Public Schools, our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Andrew Sun," Sanford said.

"Andrew was a 2012 graduate of MTHS and is remembered as a mature and accomplished young man who came to the United States from China the summer before his sophomore year in high school. He enjoyed challenging courses and took additional classes at the Columbia University Science Honors Program. Sun allegedly fell seven stories from a building at 240 Atlantic Avenue in Boston, according to boston.com. That building is off Harvard University's campus. Sun then underwent surgery Sunday morning at Massachusetts General Hospital for serious injuries, thecrimson.com reported.

By Sunday night, Sun was placed on life support and given a grim prognosis by doctors.

The report also said the Cambridge Police were not aware of someone having fallen from a building anywhere in its jurisdiction, the report said, and Harvard University Police were not investigating the matter.

Sun was a member of the school’s Faith in Action group, and was an Economics concentrator, the report said.

Montville High's principal said the guidance department is available for counseling services for those in need.

"Andrew was known as a motivated, inquisitive and hardworking student, who participated in national and international robotics competitions, and co-founded a tutoring business while at MTHS," Sanford said. "He excelled in all subject areas and won many underclassman awards for excellence."
