Flooding from Passaic and Rockaway Rivers Forecast

Parts Hook Mountain Road and Vail Road could experience flooding as a result of recent rainfall, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

Parts Hook Mountain Road and Vail Road in Montville could experience flooding from the Passaic and Rockaway rivers as a result of recent rainfall, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

Montville police said Tuesday night that there were not any flooding issues at the time, but they were monitoring the river projections.

The Rockaway River at Boonton below the Jersey City Reservoir is projected to crest at a moderate flood stage of 7.1 feet at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a National Weather Service forecast. It could reach the the level at which Vail Road floods—6 feet—as early as 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The Pine Brook streets that experienced the worst flooding after Hurricane Irene typically don't see such flooding until the flood stage reaches 7.7 feet, which is not expected to occur, according to the weather service.

The forecast shows the Passaic River at Pine Brook projected to reach a major flood stage of 21 feet by 2 p.m. on Wednesday and crest at 23 feet at 2 a.m. Friday, a level that can close a portion of Hook Mountain Road in Montville and flood parts of surrounding towns, including sections of Route 46.
